heyy ppl...anyone knows the difference between (-) and (+) birefringence??

in the gout & pseudogout Qs in the exam ...in case they dont give the name but define it instead rolling eyes

mm feyza (+) birefrin--->blue colour--->Calcium pyropo4 dihydrate crystls--->pseudogout

(-)birefrin----->yellow colour------>monosodium urate crystls--->gout

i think its sufficient to know this for exam plz let me know if we need something beyond this..

hi KG smiling face its funny...I posted the topic and that minute I came across it in UW...UW says :

(+) means ...crystals when alligned in parallel : YELLOW ...In perpendicular : BLUE

ru sure its (+) is blue and (-) is yellow confused

hi feyza yes acc. to dr goljan its (+)-->blue and (-)-->yellow..theer are few errors in UW...and also its paralelel postion only, to ray that they impart/reflect specific colour i have not raed if perpendicular also is conidered..if it is thn its too much to know for usmle..i hope..
