contraction of the quadriceps femoris muscle and extention of the leg at the knee in the patellar tendon reflex is initiated by stimulation of
a) golgi tendon organ
b)muscle spindles
c)upper motor neurons
d)Ia dorsal root fibers
e)brain stem neurons
i feel there are 2 right ans, lets c

tompat ans plssssssssssssssssssssss

  #6

B, stretch of muscle spindles stimulates Ia afferent fiber, then alfa motor neuron, leading to the reflex muscle contraction

  #7

as tompat said in his post could be two ans so think a n b but considering what is being asked will pick b.

Oops i read the question wrong, golgi is to inhibit.

Ofc we are talking about stretch myotatic reflex, which mean muscle spindles are actived.

Tompat, i think you might have thought D is correct too. But no, Ia fibers are actived during hoffmann reflex, which is a slight different procedure.

hi sorry for delay
ans is b.
but i cudn't rule out d.
jackof knives cud ya please explain what is hoffman reflex and why d is not a good choice?

  #10

got it , we are talking about the initiation,no doubt even if Ia are involved it does not initiate the reflex.
while in hoffman u directly stimulate Ia fibers with electrodes

  #11

jack or tom, could you pls explain in full what hoffman reflex is? thanks

In a nut shell hoffman reflex is elicited using an electrode to directly stimulate nerve fibers, using a range of voltage. Ia fibers activated first by low voltage, then A-alfa by higher voltage.

It's very difficult for me to explain it to you in greater detail b/c I'm afraid if i just use words to discribe you probably wont be about to understand, pictures do a better job.

There is an excellent textbook about it if you are interested and have access to a library.

Principles of Neural Science. Ed: Kandel E.R, Schwartz J.H and Jessell T.M. 2000 Fourth edition pp140 - 149 & 674 - 712.
