the other day on cbs or abc news they had a special showin on immigrants & their role in US, though many are against illegal immigrants, this story wasn't
there was a Mexican immigrant who came in illegally to the states when he was young man, i'd guess 18 or 20...he used to work the fields & well just do odd labor for a living but always was inspired by the human body...after a while he got himself into community college & learnt eglish in 1 yr & then do u know what happned to this man? he got into undergraduate school, then to medical school in John Hopkins!! But not only that, he's a neurosurgeon & soon to be the youngest head of dept for this institute at age 39!

The story is clearly fictive but I like the idea.

This story is real.
From community college he went to Harvard university.
He did med school in UCSF.
Then became faculty in Hopkins.
They did his story recently in NEJM.

Nothing is impossible.

Sure everything seems feasible except this part ” soon to be the youngest head of dept for this institute at age 39”

By head of department I presume you are referring to the title Chair or Program Director? There is no way he can make it at this age especially considering that he started late, heck he might not even get the professor title. Unless ofc you hit the jackpot and won nobel prize like a lector at my Uni did, then he was awarded professor title the exact same year. Medicine is not like business, even if you work 18 hours a day, 7 days a week it's still very unlikely that you can shorten your training. Now he might be an attending at age 39 but that is far from being the youngest ever.

To achieve all this takes a lots of money.
No bank loans for ppl without good bank history, even legal immigrant, not talking about illigal.
How he payed for his college / med school and his life maintenance?

Would be great to know the specific volume/date of NEJM, since it is a very serious journal. I strongly believe in if there is a will, there is always a way...

Life maintains college and med school. He maintains Life with renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydropower.

See, everything works out. shocked

These are the type of stories US media thrives on and attracts people to this country.People are shown just the best about America.Even I believed in this .For one little success stories there are thousands who barely make it.They have to settle for something for survival.Just take one example and that is Medicine.First it is the USMLE exams. After overcoming these, comes the hands on clinical experience which is next to impossible. The worst part of all this is that you are in a financial crunch and extreme stress. Stress and exams are inversely related.Anybody in medical profession knows what stress can do to you.It can just kill you.The worst part of all this mess is that after wasting so much time and money you are not eligible to apply for more than 80% of the programs. Why?You should have scores in 90s and you should not be out of medical school more than five years. There cannot be a deception greater than America.

My God, the story was actually true.

Very well done, my hats off for this guy. However, I still dont understand how he could afford to go to medical school being an foreigner or rather an illegial immegrant who certainly wont be elligible for a loan or scholarship.

dermadoc, it's not a right to get a residency over here, it's a priviledge....i think you have forgotten that....

this country is great, at least the bits n' parts of whats leftover...why? because as noncitizen or immigrant you can get an opportunity...yes n' i point out an opportunity...n' as immigrants we shouldn't take it as a "right".....there are countries out there where their own citizens dont even get a chance....n' so why do the flocks come to the US? the US doesn't "have to" allow us practice in this country....they don't "have to" make it easier for us to get in....n' why is that? foreign medical graduates are not citizens of this country....
i just don't understand that if someone is giving you an opportunity ....then of course you should be grateful for what you get....it's not in your right in the first place to get it....you don't get these same opportunities in other countries,...in fact because it's easier to come here, n' because there's an opporrunity....that's why everyone tries for the States....

n' just because it hasn't been a golden opportunity for you, you can't label this country....i'm just so sorry i have to disagree with you, but i have to speak up....honestly i think because things haven't gone well for you, you're looking at the glass half empty

I would have, but I have already stated my opinion in an other thread sometime ago. This is how it went: There were these guys from India (as far as I remember) complaining, disappointed, and unhappy with the situation in the US and how difficult it is to find a position there. So I dropped a line saying something like this: "would an American find a position in India?" Of course there were so many replies to my question that nnl (a moderator) made an exclusive thread for it. grin

I found the URL to it. Here you go:
