Hi my brother got his score and he is very close to me,he got 77 and he is very upset because his dream was to get residency in internal medicine and now he is saying that he is gonna commit suicide coz he cant get into med.Can u please tell me that if he can still get into internal med or not and if yes how?2)how much score in step2 can help him in getting his desired residency e g will 90 be good enough or does step1 decide it all or ur step2 also counts alot.He doesnt want to do anything else except medicine. Will step2 score in any way help him achieve what he wants.
I will be grateful to u guys if u let me know

hey
everyone knows that step2 scores are as important as step1's,in many cases more, coz step2 reflects your clinical knowledge and acumen.so just ask him to gear up again and give step2 his best shot.nothing can stop you from being matched if you are destined for it.i have seen people barely making to a passing score and still getting matched.just buck your brother up and help him gain his self-confidence.

Hi,

IM , not like surgery or anesthesia , etc compititive. Tell him, if he study well for step 2 will match well . Also apply observer, volunteer, externship to get USCE too.

Now watch him closely & tell him there is never end of the world, some even not pass the exm once or more than that due to several reason , not their fault & his score also not his fault . He just need to score more in st 2, st 3 , pass Cs all in 1st try. St 1 is only part of the test , he need to be alive to see , pass all tests till apply matching or prematch , then if not match , he can decide his fate, still he can practice in good country other than USA like, Australia, New.Z, Canada , etc around the world .
So ask him to celebrate & give credit self that he has the st 1 exm passing then proceed with studying next few tests.
So tell him it is too early to give up, there is more test to go for & st 1 is most difficult one that he has passed already.

Tell him people match with low score in all steps too, it's true . Even some with good program with luck, after other drop off from that good IM program to choose other program. You'll never know .
Another one, he can do family med which is even more medicine .. both adult & ped med than IM .

GL, all the bestnodcoolsmiling face

Thanx a lot mulitifactorial and shwe 99.9 u guys are a life saver but plz let me know one thing can he get im if he scores above 90 in step2 i will be haighly grateful.

  #5

IMHO, he can. He will need to score well and pass all the other tests on 1st try. Sometimes, a not-so-good initial result can really make you out perform yourself. Also, while applying and matching i.e. the RoL, he needs to choose carefully. By that, I mean a healthy mix of university and community based programs. He can certainly match. And, he can always try to switch to a better program after the first year, if he's so inclined. Please wish him luck from all of us!

Iam asking for ur advice not admiring me plz let me know thanx

Baby face , congratulations to you and your brother for passing the test .

Well, if you both studied together and as you say he was well prepared for the test , then there are very strong chances of him getting good score in step2. Many programs consider the combined score of both steps. Please tell him not to loose heart and start working on the next step. This is not the end of the world.

If your brother is in the U.S , he should get some clinical experience here and should choose the program wisely. You can learn more about getting USCE in the residency and match forum.

Best of luck to both of you .

aawww ! sorry dear...when u said hes so close to me I thought you were talkin about the score ... I have a bro too and I can sacrifice not only my score but even my life for him so I can understand your feelings...You're sharing his sadness so sincerely that you dont even announce your great score (congrats btw)...

ok but plzzz its time to get out of this mood...done is done and its no good to depress about things we cant change...we all know ppl out there are crazy about volunteer things...he can work there for sometime and gather as many LORs as he can...hes so lucky to have you nearby so you can figure out what went wrong and make them right ...he can do paramedical stuff to enrichen his personal statement letters which they really care about in matching processes...they love socialized and active ppl...

and when he scores a real good thing in step 2 ...then he can explain to ppl in the interviews that he was well prepared but things went somehow wrong AS THE ROCKING SCORE IN STEP 2 POINTS...but with this mood if he again scores below ppl will think thats all he can do...

so...just for a couple of months forget about 77...push hard and do your best I say...if he wants something like IM or FM there is already nothing to be sad about cuz you have no visa prob I guess and he can get a match ...

but first plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz shake up for a new bounce !!!!

may God help you both !!

Hey baby face.

I assume your bro is an IMG[correct me if I'm wrong]? The score is an important criterion while cosidering an IMG for a residency. But, it's NOT the only one that matters. As said above, a thumping Step 2 result will prove that the Step 1 score was a fluke bad luck incident and not the norm for this candidate. Fortunately, neither IM not FP is impossible to attain. So your bro will not have to change his goal. Does he have visa issues? If he does not, then the best thing to plump up his application is USCE, preferably in a reputed set-up.

OK, all this is a shetchy plan for the long run. The immediate goal is obviously an enviable Step 2 score. Having gotten a 77 now, your bro will certainly find more fire in him this time. Keep telling him that he can make it, and also tell him 'Chin up and cheer up' We're all here for him. And, for you, too.

Hey what about u guys whats happening on ur side

  #14

Hey tell him not to be greedy . gringrin ( kidding ).

Even if he does not get residency in a university program , there are chances to get a uni.program in his 2nd year. I have seen people doing that.

yeah, i agree with unique. as i'd said earlier making a jump up the ladder is an option that's always open. baby face, tell your bro, 'baby steps'. nothing is unattainable. the hard work and planning makes the diff.
