Hi,
I read on the ERAS website for IMG's that your LOR's singnature should be signed in "Blue ink" in order to be scanned. I have my LOR's signed in black ink. Does anyone know how strict is ERAS/ECFMG in this rule? I hate to have to re-ask all my attendings to write new letters!
Thanks

If yours signed before they issue the blue ink policy then you're excused. But is after that date, I would suggest you to call and ask ecfmg regarding this matter.

You dont need to worry. I did not read the "blue ink requirement" until I got my LOR in hands which had a black-ink signature. I sent it to ERAS anyway and had NO trouble with that. Thanks God. Thats my personal experience.

But I agree with Kca, may be you should call ECFMG to make sure and ease our mind.

blue and black was a newly introduced policy in the last match ...this year it will be more of a norm with most candidates getting lors signed in blue ink ..having said that it also doesnt mean that black ink lors are kaput ...the best answer of what is to happen with ink issue lies with ecfmg ..call and confirm ..

even if you cant arrange lors in blue ink I dont see a major harm coming your way ..a good lor will be as good as it is irrespective of ink used

you dont want to request your attendings to write a new letter ..thats understandable ..but believe me most times we assume fear of unkonwn where there isnt one ...there is plenty of time till september ..you can let the secrataries know about it ..they can whisper in attendings ear when they are ready ..and then they wont mind doing one more letter when they know the rationale behind it ...at leasst this will let you have uniterrupted sleep .

Thanks. Do you think I can bring the letter back to them and ask them to sign beside their old signature with blue ink? That way it's not too much of a hassle for them.

That won't be best options disapproval

Now there should be no problem in that ..but again I want to emphasize that the attendings dont handtype the letter no do they handwrite it ...the big work is done by secreatary ....so if you take their permision and get a new one typed by the secreatary ...take the old one along with new one in case they want to check it ...then get it signed ..this is the anxiety buster in your case ....rest all will be fine and working but the peace you will get with such a deed will be unmatched ....dont worry if you cant get this done ...i didnt get any signed in blue ...color duznt matter in the end when the interviewer has your lor in hand ..what matters is whats written in the lor .

2. can i send the lor now itself or wait till i apply with the scores and stuff ie after sept 1???

3. they say that there is a procedure to send the letter by the doctor himself without us seeing what is in the letter ? pls explain...

one more question...i wonder whats an aamc id? i dont have it but the doctor remembers me now...so can i submit the form without the aamc id???

You can submit the form without aamc id. It's the id number you got when you register with eras.
You need to send the original LoR, but wait till the application season is open. They won't accept copy last year, but you need to read ERAS requirements (it might changes again this year)
The doctor can send the letter directly to ecfmg, but adding the cover letter. No other special procedure needed.
