Prayingfora99 , here are the answers to your questions:
1: I am preparing for almost a year now and still on my first read .Actually , I have a huge gap in my career , so I had forgotten whatever I had studied in college and secondly many things have changed since then . Some subjects like Molecular biology, Genetics , Behavioral science etc. were not taught in my country at that time. When I came to U.S , I had two options , 1) stay home for the rest of my life and forget that I was a doctor once ( I tried that but it kinda hurt me ) , 2) Take USMLE and practice medicine here. I knew it was like moving a mountain after such a long gap in my studies , three kids and a busy husband but I followed my heart and chose this rough long terrain.
2: I knew about Kaplan lecture notes and actually had bought them but did not know about DVDs.
3: As far as I know , you are still a student , right ? If so , you should build your concepts now. It will always help you in your career. As far as the books are concerned , remember, Kaplan is only REVIEW notes and Ganong is the text book. You cannot directly compare the two. To review a subject , you should know it first . Ganong is not as big as Guyton , which many good students go through  . Remember one more thing , kaplan courses are only REVIEW courses and they cannot substitute your med.school . Know your concepts cold .You know what I mean to say ??!!!

unique1 ... us new guys and gals have so much to learn from people like you and some other moderators. So, please keep the good advice coming. Personaly, I was searching for support almost one year before i heard about this lovely forum and its healthy "mind wise!" community. Regarding the text books: is it enough for me just to read them and be familiar with them or i should really get the heck of it? Because i already have many school books to master. By the way, Im glad and happy for you that you chose to complete your medical life.

goshh hot topic these days..hmmm.....it stikes to me as well but i think
1.all usmle takers are memeber here so considering this fact if we get 99 daily its seems ok....and 2nd
2. i have come down to the conclusion that ppl who write in their exp.they did study for small portion of time an dgot 99, they might be pointing to serious study but they must have been studying on n off for like a year or 2 or may be more so reading those big books would fit ok also ((us students also do this the difference they study in their 1 and 2nd year but start annoat FA)...likewise these 99ers doing and posting the time only which they feel confident about...even its going to be a year almost for me to studying and feel so ashamed of myself that im taking such long time but its true like NNL said but like unique said depends on students capability,recent vs old grad and so amny other factors but
3.if moderators or admin do stats here at site how many ppl registered/year or for this year 2006-2007 and check how many of them got 99 and get the %age b/c i think almost all are very familiar with this site and being very popular among img..
4.last but not the laest who get 90+ do get encouage to psot their exp and score b/c they know they will be appreciated and responded well and think can guide and encouage other fellow doctors in same conditions but yes its not impossible but less possible that anyone studied for few weeks and got 99 im sure they must have been studying on n off but regular and then finalise they are taking exam...
oppse!!!!too long post its juz my point of view...as its open forum anyone can post anything they wish...so we cant rationalize anything in particular..

Unique my hats off to ur hubby n i do believe u but the most imp distinction is ur hubby stresses on CONCEPTS while most of the ones we found suspicious dont mention that.
I m not saying that every one here is lying but plz learn to pick the real ppl and the pretenders.

hi
i`m the one who started this topic i didn`t even expect that the discussion would be hot as it is now
alhamdolelah i got my results the on Thursday 22nd of may which was unexpected 99
2 friends of my class had the exam 1 week b4 me got also 99 236 , 252
all of us the 1st read took 7 to 8 months from us as we all fresh graduates and don`t know any basic since
the revision and mcqs took us around 3 to 4 months
6 hours after i posted this topic i decided to remove it as i felt that it may depress people here but i found 18 replies !!!!!!!!!!!!
but i guess it`s a good thing to open this discussion and know what is going on
i think all the reasons that u said here is right
people may truly lie i dunno why but i remember i read someone who could answer the block in 30 mins in step2 ck !!!!!!!!!!! whe have minds dont we ? and in three months he read all text books u imagine and solved all mcqs available these people have 24hs per day or what but surely some people got 99 my 2 friends was 2 of the best in my class so it was expected for the to get 99

Nobody is saying anything abt real achievers .Well, we all want to get real good scores(no doubt abt that). But it is always better to be cautious about .. you know what.
This is not only about scoring 99.or lying about the scores.... Lies creep in ,into other areas too ..thats the scary part!
If not for the good housekeeping on this site , it would have been filled with all kinds of horrible stuff.
Basically we all should have only one name Praying4a99.
Remember that old saying "AIM FOR THE MOON , EVEN IF YOU MISS , YOU"LL BE AMONG THE STARS!!

Im aiming for the nearest star to the world instead of the moon so hope I dont fall in a black hole
p4a99...u really are over estimating me...I know how to get a high 90 now and I am aware that I have that capacity for the last 2.5 months but its a bit late and I have no intention and luxury to extend my day whatever my score will be
still these are so encouraging for me and helps me not to lose the self confidence to pass and I would never be able to feel that way without you guys
