A 42 yr old woman complains of a burning pain in the upper middle region of her abdomen. The pain usually occurs about 2 hrs after a meal and frequently awakens her at night.Antacids can usually relieve the pain within few minutes. An x-ray film reveals a typical duodenal ulcer identified as a discrete crater in the proximal portion of the doudenal bulb.Because the woman does not have a history of chronic use of aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs(NSAIDS),the bacterium H.pylori is assumed to be the major factor in the etiology of the ulcer.Which of the following is likely to be normal in this woman? a)basal acid output b)fasting serum gastrin c)gastrin response to a meal d)maximal acid output e)parietal cell mass f)pepsin secretion can anyone explain the difference between basal acid output and maximal acid output?

basal acid output is quantity of HCl secreted per hour by the stomach in the unstimulated basal state. maximal acid output is total acid output in the hour after stimulation with gastrin or histamine.
