I find that I am JUST making it with the patient note in 9 minutes and 55 seconds. Sometimes I actually need a few extra seconds though. I have a few questions on how to save time. For example: can we just write WNL for vitals if they are normal, or do we actually have to mention the normals? If an abreviation is not mentioned on the list, how do we know if we can use it or not? For example can we write: No M/R/G instead of No murmurs/rubs/gallops??? Its not mentioned in the abbreviations list but all doctors write it like this in real life. Are these abbrevations allowed: CVA -costovertebral angle CP -chest pain Abd -abdomen or abdominal N/V -nausea vomiting for positive findings how do we type it: + or (+)? same for negative: - or (-)? there are so many others which are not mentioned on the list but are actually used in real life -can't recall all right now... So how do we know which ones are OK and NOT ok to use??? thanks.

I used WNL for vitals during the exam... I used WNL quite alot during my note... used abd for abdomen... used CVA for costovertebral angle... used + and - signs didn't use N/V and CP so don't know about them... PGI2 is right - when in doubt use the full word... practice your PN using FA... i used their outline for the note and it helped alot (except my chief complaint was in bulleted form)... Good luck!

In the list in FA they say CVA stands for Cerebrovascular Accident SO can we STILL USE IT to mean Costovertebral Angle?

DrVirgo pls go thru the abbreviation section of FA and use ONLY those abbreviations in the exam. In the exam when you are in dabout regarding an abbreviation look at the list of those at your left hand side of the desk and if the abbreviation you are going to use is in the list, only then go ahead with it. because the abbreviations one might use which is not approved by them is usually misunderstood by the examiners.

thanks doc179. I just want to be prepared and I don't want to waste time looking up an abbreviation on the list on test day because if I'm going to look it up, I would spend the same time writing it out. Is the list given in FA the same as the one in the exam? If so i'll look it over and only use those abbreviations. Thanks again for your help.

Hey DrVirgo, sorry I can not be of much help to you in this regard as I did nt use abbreviations in my exam. But I am sure that the abbreviations listed in FA are the accepted ones for the exam. and also practice to write or type the PN in 8 minutes.
