Hi all,
i have just joined these forums, there is a wealth of information for the uninitiated. firstly to introduce myself, graduated in 2000 (india), practiced till current time and now have moved to the US. have just recently started preparing for step 1. there is more to acquiring a residency than just these exams, and it is rather confusing to sift through all the information here and from other resources to accurately draw out steps for a path towards the final goal of getting into a program.

is there a thread (here or elsewhere) that outlines the sequence of events/steps towards acheiving the goal of residency.

also have been confused by what roughly are the scores needed to secure a program.

i do hope somebody can shed some light or lead me in the right directions.

all help is sincerely appreciated.

regards,
asmd.

Well ASMD, I dont think there is an absolute path to residency since many issues are involved. However some of the things you should focus on are the following:

USMLE scores
United States Clinical Experience (USCE)
Research Experience (published articles, protocols, etc)
Visa Status
No. of years after graduation
Observerships/Externships
Letteres of Reccommendation from US physicians

These are only some things that are taken into account when applying for a position in the United States. Also, depending on your specialty, things might vary. For example, as a general rule, surgical specialties are harder to get into than non surgical. I advise you to surf this forum carefully as I am sure you will probably find most of the answers here.
