A 54-year-old man comes to the physician because of an intermittent rash and joint pain during the past 9 months. Physical examination shows erythematous, scaly plaques on the extensor surfaces of the upper and lower extremities. Removal of the scales results in small bleeding points in the epidermis. A photograph of the patient's knees is shown. A biopsy specimen of one of the lesions shows neutrophils collecting within the stratum corneum, parakeratosis, and elongated dermal papillae. Which of the following cellular adaptations is most likely in the epidermis of affected skin in this patient? A. Atrophy B. Dysplasia C. Hyperplasia D. Hypertrophy E. Metaplasia F. Neoplasia
