Finally I received my score today its 225/91 I am so relieved. I used to visit the forum for experience of other exam takers and for advice from them. I didn’t do Questions on the forum as they were really diffcult for me. So here is my story of CK preparation.
My preparation:
Now something about myself. I am an IMG 2006 graduate an average student in med school, never bothered much if I passed. I started studies from January 07. gave my exam on 25th april. I used Kaplan notes, UW Qbank, FA, crush the boards. I did 1st read of kap notes in 25 days. I subscribed for UW Qbank for a month. It really helped me a lot. Although I had decided to do it twice in one month period I couldn’t. I did 1st round in 20 days & 2nd round started doing wrong ones but finally had to rush around 300 Qs by reading just explanations. My score in UW was 57%. I made notes ( 3 notebooks) during this time. While doing Q bank I didn’t read notes with it as I can just focus one thing at a time. Then from march I started freaking out as I was expecting to give exam by march end.
From march I was not much systematic in my studies. I don’t remember the order in which I read but I used to read like mad for 4/ 5/6 days and just couldn’t study for 1/ 2days. I was so scared that march arrived I was having panic attacks every now and then.
During last 45 days I was either eating, sleeping, living with just my kap notes, FA, crush , UW notes or shopping!!!!. I had already decided to give the exam whatever happens. So never thought of giving NBME online. Just went through downloaded Qs available on the forum never bothered about the correct answers!
Finally I scheduled my exam on 17th april.meanwhile I read all the Kaplan notes, UWnotes over and over again. By end of march again had another sever panic attack. I was just so afraid I have exam in 15 days was not at all sure what to do in these last 15 days. Finally I didn’t studied for 3-4 days took my time to make myself understand that it was just a exam. I calmed down by now and thank god my brain behaved well till exam.
Last 20 days I read FA 1st time in 4 days. Did UW notebooks in 3 days. Crush in 2 days. FA 2nd time in 3-4 days. Did UW notes again in 2-3 days. Reviewed Kaplan notes really fast in last 2-3 days also tooks 1 day or half day breaks in between
I never referred back sometimes googled to search some info but never referred to big books. As I was always short of time.
About the Exam day:
Sleeping well at night before the exam & being calm is extremely important. I studied till 11:30 night b4 the exam. Then had some wine and some alprax( got the idea from forum!!) Was on bed but didn’t sleep till 2 am. Finally I did sleep woke up at 6:30 am.
Had 2 egg sandwiches in the morning. Guys have heavy breakfast in the morning as you need lots of energy to go through day. I went to centre with lots of water, coffee, chocolates, lunch. My centre didn’t had luch area & I did nt feel like eating too had few muffins during break. It saved lots of my break time. I took Tylenol in the morning needed one after 6 blocks
About the exam:
It was doable. It wasn’t that scary afterall. I was calm during exam, everything went so mechanically. Did tutorial fast, then first 2 blocks, 4min break , 2 blocks, 4 min break , another 1 block. And now I was so tired after 5th block. I ate some muffin water, took Tylenol as my head was beginning to pound. Then I took break after every block. After 7th block I really needed break, luckily had around 30 min of breks then too. I went out of the building and walked around for 15 min to get some fresh air. Then did last block.
Content of exam:
IM 60-My exam was mostly IM.... I would say IM+peads was almost 70%...then was Ob/gy had one trauma Q in each block. 2-3 psych Q in each block.. one epidemio... 2 CXR ..2CT..2-4 derma pic.. 1 ecg... not much preventive med...CVS and respi Qs were most often..
I think Qs come randomly from the Q pool.. everyone experience is diff but IM is certainly most of it... Qs were mix of 3 liners to 5-8 liners... got most of the 8 liners in last 2 blocks..so idnt had time in them or else it was ok
