when there is injury to the ulnar nerve resulting in claw hand, how come the radial nerve (extensor function) can't extend the fingers to compensate for the malfunctioning ulnar nerve in the 4th and 5th digits?????

Extensor digitorum muscle does insert to the distal phalanx that s not the problem. claw hand is a result of dissynergy due to the disfunction of interossea muscles, in a nut shell, a clawed hand is the opposite joint position of lubricales and interossea muscles' action. You got to see the real thing to really understand how it works.
