Hi, I'm an old IMG with only average USMLE step1 and 2 score and the matching rate is becoming lower in recent 2 years(I guess), so I've been thinking about taking the RN program.I've heard that some friends works as RNs in the hospital and prepare exam at the same time.Sounds like GOOD INCOME and GOOD USCE...

But I wonder if worth or not to take at least 1 year to complete the RN program..Does anyone can give any advice? especially someone who work in the medical field now

I wouldn´t do it..., to much time and $..., I would do externships or reserach or S3 and apply for the match.., not sure about your situation and plans...

Hi Spitmetal and Egomez2001, Thanks for the respone.

Does anyone here think about the BACKUP CAREER in the medical field,

I think about what if I keep failing to match, what should I do?

2 of my friends gave up to be Doctors here and left cuz they kept failing to match,

sounds frustrating, isn't? but it DO happen!!!

So could someone please give me some light which jobs are better for being our bachup career?

I mean BETTER SALARY AND MORE MEDICAL PRACTICE?

Thabks!

if you want to stay in the U.S. -whatever it takes- and you fail to match over and over, and again, it could be an option to be a physician assistant.

if I didn't match after a couple of attempts, I would go back to my home country to be a doctor out there. I'd prefer this rather than being a RN or PA or XYZ in the U.S.

Thanks Chemamr,

I know about the physician assistant, but I live in California with my family, is there any PA program here? i don't think so..... And for my personal issue, it's kind of hard to move far to the east side to take the program like this..

or should I get a job whatever the position is in the hospital at first, I've been here for several years and almost forgot the clinical experience I've ever had

Dear Donna,

I know lots of MDs (>10) are doing technicians in CA because they failed to be matched. The reasons are due to age, scores, English, experience..

They got their technician degrees from vocational college after 2 years of study and getting 26 USD/hour, most of them got psychiatric technician lisense. You can ask some colleges for this info, e.g. Bryman if you are in CA.

I always think of back up careers before studying USMLE because I saw a lot of unmatched IMGs. However, never giving up, I also saw a MD, she failed to be matched in 3 years consecutively due to low scores and many attempts for each step, then she worked as a medical assistant, and finally matched in her workplace after 2 year working for them.

I see..., in that case I think PA it´s the best option..., I didn´t know about the technician license that robin mentions which it´s another option..., and still while doing any of this 2 you can stil try to match...

I don´t know about the specifics of your situation...

I don´t mean to say not matching it´s not an option, of course it´s real but..., BE POSITIVE DONNA, HAVE FAITH, BELIEVE, YOUR THOUGTS AND ATTITUDE WILL HAVE AN EFFECT ON YOUR LIFE... AND WHEN YOU WALK AROUND LIFE LIKE THAT, PEOPLE CAN SEE IT AND FEEL IT AND THINGS START TO HAPPEN WHICH YOU NEVER IMAGINE EVEN IN YOUR WILDEST DREAMSwink

Im a BSN as well. i havent taken the nursing license exam though. have passed all the MLE's and already ECFMG certified. my question is does practicing as a nurse qualify as US clinical experience. i figured that if i wldnt match after a few tries then id practice as a nurse to get that experience.

" my question is does practicing as a nurse qualify as US clinical experience."

that's a good question, I honestly don't know. It's the first time I heard of RN as USCE. Anybody knows about this??

First at all, dear friends, Thanks all of u giving me sooo many idea.

Hi Egomez and Spitmetal: Thanks for your kindly supporting that really touch my heart!! Actually, my situation is a little bit tough oweing to my family issue. However, I won't give up and keep working hard to reach goals whatever how worse the situation is....I just think it's better for me to work in the medical field first (my English is not good at all) then won't spend too much time to wait for the unknown futhure. But it's not easy to get a job in the hospital if u don't have any license

Dear Robin: Thanks for giving me such information.Does the psychiatric technician need good English? My speciaty is in internal medicine, so I don't have any idea about this positon.I ever think about EKG technician, sonographer...but I know is not good pay though. As you mention, lots of Philippino work in the medical field especially as a RNand Do u know the RN program take HOW LONG to complete in our case?

Hi Clyde driver: I think work as a RN definitely as USCE.Why not get the nursing license(my friend said the exam is really easy!)and have a part time job or full time if you wannna make more$$, You also can try to get the job in the hospital that you intrest to be matched and be familar with members of residency program, you are going to have much chance to get into.....That's my opinon.... Can YOU PLEASE TELL me WHAT IS BSN.Where you take the RN program?here or in your country?

  #16

Hi Donna. Oh BSN stands for bachelor of science in nursing. I took it
in my home country before i got here. it was actually just a back-up
plan in case i didnt pass the MLE's or if in case i passed but didnt
get matched. im presently doing volunteer work in an E.R. program but
ive already submitted the documents i need to be able to take the
nursing exam and im now just waiting for my eligibility to take it. if you're interested in an online nursing course i think i know of where you could take it. i have a few friends who have given up on MLE's and decided to take the nursing route. i think it takes a year to be able to finish the course but unfortunately i dont know how
much. PM me if you'd want to get the few details that i know of. il try
to ask my friends too how much it costs if you're interested.

For Clyde driver: That would be great if u can give me more details about the online course. Please e-mail to dona319@hotmail.com Thanks a lot!
