I'm writing this because ignorance causes many people to suffer needlessly. I have even found an Eckerd's pharmacy that refused to sell me my medication because of their ignorance.

My son was on Ritalin for ADHD, and I always read the papers that come with perscriptions, so I noticed that it said it was also used for treating narcolepsy. Like most people, I thought narcolepsy was when people just dropped off to sleep all the time. I Googled narcolepsy, and discovered the Stanford School of Medicine's web site for their Center For Narcolepsy.

I wish all family and internal medicine doctors were aware of this web site, because as I read, I realized that was what I had. The next day I went to my doctor who set me up for a sleep study. Classic sleep patterns... He later told me that when he was in Med School, there was about one paragraph on sleep disorders (he graduated in the early 1990s).

He also thanked me because after my diagnosis, he went through his files and found many patients that he hadn't been able to help. He got many of them to get sleep studies done and found that most had either narcolepsy or sleep apnea. Now those people finally know what it feels like to be alive and healthy.

The way I would discribe the way I used to feel all the time... I was in a dead body, having to force every step, all day, every day. And at night, about an hour and a half after falling to sleep, I'd wake up and be wide awake for at least an hour knowing all the time that the next day was going to be total misery.

Please go to that web site, tell your fellow students and your instructors. You will save an untold number of people from a horrible life.

The most distressing part... it took 26 years of all kinds of tests, and being told that it was all in my head to get a diagnosis.

The best part... life is good... finally.nodnodnod
