Hi there! I have a question regarding the ECFMG certification and ERAS application: some people told me that it is possible to apply to programs without being ECFMG certified (in my case I would have all necessary USMLE Steps but I will receive my medical diploma around December). Those people also mentioned that your application will be considered like everybody else's if you will be ECFMG-certified by match-day. I just browsed through some residency websites and found some programs that require a full ECFMG certification by the time you submit your application ("otherwise the application will not be reviewed") - since programs interview in December to January I would never be able to get my medical diploma certified by that time. Can anybody clarify this? Do I effectively have to discard those programs from my list or is there any room for negotiation? Or did I misunderstand the whole point completely? In addition, what are your experiences with how long the certification process usually takes (sounds pretty long, receive diploma, send it to ECFMG, ECFMG sends it to med school, med school sends it back to ECFMG, add the standard "processing times" equals 6 months????). Thanks!

Different programs will have different criteria for application. As for ECFMG prcessing time, only ECFMG will know the answer - it might be different time periods for different countries and schools.
