Dear BBB or those who can help with my question,

I have been a volunteering physican for a while at a private clinic. (about 20hr/wk), I have done all the steps (including step 3). I am allowed to do basically everything: History, PE, write a prescrition, write a referal, etc. Then I will report it to my supervisor (He is a licensed physican), who will talk with the patient while I am present, and of course sign the prescription if I don't make any mistakes. It has been a good learning experience... I enjoy what I am doing and appreciate this opputunity i have. Does this count as externship? I am just confused about what I should put down on my ERAS application...
LOR is not going to be a problem for me since my supervisor is happy with my performance.
Thanks.

You can call it obsevership not externship coz it is not a University hopital.

It is not important for people to do Externship, observership or whatever it is, it is important to have some kind of clinical experience which program director or interviewer can rely on that to hire you for residenvy.

Names are not important, don't mess up with them.

Observership - externship are usually at a hospital that has a residency program.

Thanks, Amirhossein and BBB. I hope this experience will help me with my 2008 application. What do you think? Perhaps it is not good to call it observership or externship in my case. But those are so difficult to get in the city where I live...

you are lucky redsky... i was hoping for the same but have been unsuccessful in my efforts thus far...sad

TO BBB,
IF this is not considered externship or observership, is it worth doing it? SHould I try harder to get an observership instead. Just hoping this is not a waste of time.

i am kinda in the same boat as redsky...so wht do we mention it as in the resume if not observership/externship??and if none of the above...is it worth doing???pls reply back...coz if its not worth it...i ll concentrate wholly on step 3 prep...

none of the universities/hosptls hving residency programs offer observerships...coz of malpractice litigations...so wht other choices do we have...

PGI2alpha, I wish someone could shed some light on this... HIPPA law has made it so difficult for us IMGs...

To PGI2alpha, Contact all the programs, I mean all, you will find a spot.

To redsky, You can call it "Observer at a clinic".

thanks, amirhossein.
I am also interested in Neurology, do you think experience in IM or FM could be viewed as a negative point in my application for PD? I don't have any clinical exp. in neurology, has a MS. in neuroscience.

Redsky, question here arises is that would your doctor write all this what you have said in his letter of recommendation?,
the doctors do take your help and teach you as well in the clinics ,however due to malpractice insurance purpose(as you are not insured) they donot exceed to write more than shadowing.
If I am wrong plz do correct me, this is best from my knowlege and legally acceptable as well.

rabshaw,
Actually, he agrees to write what I have been doing. Still my concern is I can not say this is externship since this is not hospital based experience. I have a lot of exposure to office based cases, need more in-patient clinical experience. That is my concern and believe me I am trying very hard to get externship locally. I have a family and a kid, I can not afford to just move to another city for a few month of extern....
