edie thanx for ur kind words...its not that my parents can't take care of themselves..they can but still i feel that they r getting older...

  #177

I understand, Gly, my parents are getting older, they live far away, I hardly get to see them, and miss them terribly. But they both know what is going on with me right now, and are supportive still. It is their love and support, albeit from afar, that I feel most. I am sure if you talked to your folks, you will feel better.

Thanks, I hope so, Acintya.

excuse mesad

i just wante to know what they mean by "de novo" ... i read that it means over again but i dont feel that that fits in with the context ...

"..... but some cholesterol may be synthesized de novo. Most de novo synthesis occures in the liver,..."

and on the same page "... lovastatin and simvastatin inhibit de novo cholesterol synthesis..."

So, what do you think?

A;
wikipedia:

  • In Biochemistry, de novo synthesis refers to the synthesis of complex molecules from simple molecules such as sugars or amino acids, as opposed to their being recycled after partial degradation. For example, de novo synthesis of nucleotides, as opposed to the salvage pathway.

  • In Medicine and genetics a de novo mutation is one which neither parent possessed nor transmitted. It first appeared in the DNA of the affected individual.

Do you know what causes primary hyper lipidemia type IIa? it says in the table page 218 that it is an autosomal dominant disease ... but what is the exact thing that is deficient?confused

I think it means when it is made up in liver without going through the complex synthesis pathway. So those drugs block this way of making cholesterol in liver?

      #185

Type IIa, you have fewer LDL receptors. Those help carry the cholesterol to liver, so if decreased, more cholesterol in blood.

Building on what Edie explained,de novo synthesis means made from scratch, as opposed to reclaiming it from salvage pathways. I think I remember it in Kaplan lecture someplace.

Great to discuss here! Good luck!

good morning edie how r u doin with pharm....it was good to talk to u yesterday..i feel so good that i have ppl to talk out my heart in this forum..happy studying

      #194

Hi KG, thanks for the looking out smiling face

Well, just finished PreTest pharm q's, and of 69, only got 42 correct shaking head for a whopping score of 61%. I predict below avg performance in pharm on my upcoming NBME!

On a lighter note, my darling dear husband, who had it up to his eyeballs with my new wallpaper/study charts, went out to Staples and brought back 2 large dry-erase boards and a big pack of dry erase markers for me, in exchange for taking down all of the charts. Half of my study is his office, and yes, my stuff sort of spilled over to his side, no idea how that happened grin wink It actually worked out great, room looks neater, everyone's happy smiling face I hole-punched my charts and stuck them in a binder with other notes I refer to often, and feel better about moving on with pharm. Going to go ahead, bite the bullet and read the 30+ pages (not including the mcq's) in baby Katzung pharm book on antibiotics, then do more q's later on.

Hi, i have the Q-book & pretest ... when do you think its better for me to start doing their Qs? and do i do them as a test or just for learning more things and looking at the facts in a new way?

      #196

Hi! You can do a few, say, 10-20 q's before you read as a pretest, next do a set after reading for learning/reinforcing concepts, then another set later for testing yourself. I think it's good to have access to as many diff types of Q's possible so you can be prepared for whatever MLE throws your way.

      #197

    thanks ... smiling face
