You have the great method to memorize and organize things. I also make a excel file and put all my notes in there. It is easy to uodate and make table. But I am so slow in reading now. My neurons died 50%!

  #27

Hi Huyniid, thanks. You use tables in Excel, cool! Getting slow in the readings is normal, I am finding, and a necessary thing. We need to take little dips and breaks to revitalize, renew and refresh. Just as long as you get back on track and don't fall too far behind! So don't overdo it and burnout, but don't stay in slow motion and fall behind. I guess this is what is called the "Happy Medium" smiling face

Good morning Journal.I did a few World q's earlier and just finished going over the explanations for neoplasia path and pharm. Well, the 56% can attest to the new methods I started using. I got many q's right that I otherwise would have gotten wrong. But more interesting, there was a question on a topic that I just read in RR Path that I didn't put on a notecard, and I got it wrong! I couldn't believe it. I didn't make a notecard because it was something I thought I'd just simply remember and be able to recall. NOT! Am going to add that info to a card straight away.

Then, there were 2 q's I missed because the answers, which I got down to 2 choices, were almost the same. Unfortunately, the info I put on my notecards did not get down to that level of detail (nor did RR Path). I recalled that info from the explanations in Robbins review, but didn't commit that info to memory nor put it on a card and HELLO! It comes to taunt me on the queston bank! raised eyebrow I need to go back over the explanations in that Robbins review book more c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y.

I got all but one of the pharm questions. So, charting definitely helps, too. The one I got wrong was a drug I'd never heard of. Only 20-something % of people got it right. Before the subscription ends, I am going to go over ALL the explanations and note them.

I wanted to start on endocrine this weekend. But I won't as I still need to connect a few things on the topics I covered over the past two weeks.

  #30

Just did some BSS q's in genetics and biochem to refresh on those topics. Got 80% for genetics and 60% for biochem. Some of the questions were kind of strange. Or maybe just different from what I am used to seeing with UWorld and Kaplan? But like those two banks, it's the explanations that are the strongest features. OK! Back to work!!!

  #31

Dear Journal,

I so suck at UW q's mad Especially in timed, unused randomized mode. And I am too annoyed to go over the explanations! I am thinking I should have left this bank alone until I am at least done with 1-2 readings on everything. REALITY. I am an average student. REALITY. I will not get a 99. REALITY. I will get a passing, but average or below average score. This is my reality. No matter how organized, how dedicated, how many hours committed, no matter how great the resources, I am average, and I have a limit with how high I can go. So the big question that remains is: Am I ok with that? And the answer is: YES smiling face

So I am working really hard at average. Here's what's scary: if I slacked off, even just a little bit, I would FAIL step 1. I cannot slack. No dilly-dallying (thnx Concept). Have to keep up the pace. Keep the momentum. But let me just say: studying for this freakin' thing has got to be the worst part of my medical education thus far!!!

  #32

Keep working at it eddie..u l do it!it so good u v taken such an early start.this is the right time for everything.

and dont let anything scare you.u l breeze through it,u r hardworking and are working at it.definitely studying is the owrst part but think about it in this way.just give it ur best shot.ur one best shot.and thats all that it takes.thats all that matters.

Thank you so much for the push, concept. I will keep going. I took off yesterday to participate in holiday festivities with family and friends. Refreshing to be around mostly people not involved with medicine. Had good fun. Ate too much, drank too much. Paying for it today, with indigestion!

Ok, so here I am in week 3. I think I'll give myself half the day to review weeks 1-2 AGAIN, then begin reading endocrine physio later on.

  #34

Hey Edie, How can you let even you tell yourself that you are average.

You have a plan, your almost sticking by it.You are honest and helpful. You seem determined and your posts are very inspirational. You are already way above average.

I don't think this is a good time for fear and self doubt. This is the time for you to believe in yourself and aim high.

I have made similar mistakes and hence have taken the liberty to tell you mind.
Don't do what I did. Please believe in yourself, because you can really do this.

good luck.

  #35

Oh and thanks for the links.Very useful, and I love your entries.keep them coming.

  #36

I Second medocuk's opinion TOTALLY!

You are way up there my friend! I like your analysis and how you take time to think through and make the necessary changes... very useful for a person like me who sometimes puts blinkers and studies for the sake of studying without learning from mistakes!! This is your first read and you are doing UW, it is a learning tool, not to assess your knowledge!

THERE IS NO TIME for self doubt... ABSOLUTELY! KEEP STRIVING!

THANKS, GUYS/GALS, big hugs to you all for putting me back in the right place! You all are right, this is not the time for self-doubt, so I have bottled up my doubt and thrown it into a bottomless pit nod I feel renewed and refreshed and excited. So let's get going!!!

Speaking of being excited, I am very excited about Gogeta's amazing exam experience. If you haven't read it yet, check it out, it is very unique and fun to read, as well as being uplifting. I am certain that GOGETA GOT'EM!!!!

For today, I plan to continue endocrine physio with Kaplan note. Then move over to endocrine path with RR and G audios. Posting the schedule updates later.

  #38

Well done.I am so happy for you.Your excitement is contagious I am raring to go too..

Hmm, seems that the Goljan endocrine lectures are mislabeled and I have been listening to them out of order! The start of the endo lects is the second "GYN" lecture, with time 44:44. Part two is "Endocrine", with time 58:45. I was listening to the second endo lecture, thinking there was only one endo lecture shocked

  #41

edie@ I terribly admire your work pace. I thought I will have to run after you, but I think I cannot do it now!

Totally agree with medocuk, you are superb!

So what you are doing now are reading Kap Notes, listening to Goljan and taking QS (which source?). Do you have some comments about the effective way for us?

Thanks

  #42

Thanks, Huyniid, I am doing Qs from several places: UWorld, Kaplan (qbanks, qbook), BSS and Robbins review book. S/t Pretest, RR online q's. Right now, mostly just doing questions on my readings. I will do more q's as I go on.

I can't really advise one 'best' way of going about this studying. Some people have stronger knowledge or foundation, and do well with just FA and Q's. Others need to 're-learn' everything. I am in the middle! Some things I am strong in, others, I will need to re-learn because it was taught in a non-step 1 way, or I just didn't learn it well in school to begin with. So for me, I spend extra time on weak areas, trying to make sure I really really know the concepts. Goljan is great for this part. So is FA. Kaplan is the bridge in between. I forgot a lot of stuff, and still forget stuff, so I need to have notecards and charts all over the house. It's a pain, but I have to do whatever it takes to make the info stick smiling face And to think, I tried to avoid all of this by 'learning it well in school to have an easier go at it when step 1 prep time came'. Hah! Yeah, right!!! Average med student here, HELLO!!!! grin

So, having said all of that, experimenting with a few methods may help you figure out your best way. Reading the exam experiences and prep methods is useful, too.

Hello all, thanks to those that left comments! Cool!

Ellen: thanks for stopping over and sharing the love smiling face

Hi Medocuk! Hope your studies are going good today!!!

Newbeginnings: LOL! You bring the pastry! grin

Afrocaribb: I am happy the links are useful to you. I'll try and put more as I go along.

Concept: LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't have a plan, well, not a pre-made one. Been there, done that--no good for me, so what I have been doing is a little different. I put down what I DID versus what I intend to do. Does that make sense? I may comment about what I intend to do in the entries, even that doesn't always pan out that way (take today for example wink ). I log onto the schedule what I did AFTER I did it. Helps me keep track of the topics and how much time I am spending on them, my scores on questions, eg, trends up/down/no change, etc. And yes, my battery ran out last night! So I took a break from studying today and spent the whole morning and afternoon outdoors. Shopped a little, had lunch with the husband, and went to an art festival. And now, home again and it's time to get back to the books. After a little nap smiling face

HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!!!!

Good morning Journal, and all Step 1 warriors!.

Today I want to talk about Time Management.

I was perusing a few of the other journals, and one of the posts caught my attention:
"There is a huge different between active and passive reading.May be what u have been doing is going through stuff and not really understanding it or assimilating it."

Thank you so much, Medocuk, for writing those words! I am all too guilty of this very thing, passive reading. Some little thing in my brain is holding a big ticking clock, so that when I study, somehow the fact that I am running out of time sounds an alarm in my head. The next thing I know, I am done reading, doing q's, screwing them up, then re-reading the material again! If that isn't a poor use of time, I don't know what is. So, I will do things differently. How? I will give each page 10 minutes. That seems like an eternity esp. with Goljan's RR Path outline format. What have I to lose? So thanks, Medocuk, for the heads up! smiling face I'll post how this works out later.

Today, I am finishing up endocrine pharm in Katzung and male/female reproductive in RR Path. Finished reading endocrine last night...but somehow, I feel I'll be going back!
