Guys, what are the pros and cons of these entities. Also, how difficult or easy is it for FMGs to get into these....any thought or input will be appreciated. If there is any link for the same, do kindly post it.

in hindsight - i say if u dont have a visa issue or a preference for a h - i wud defin apply and consider doing a trans / prelim yr. pre med is tuf but pre surg is a bit easier to get into.

Apurva, could you please elaborate a bit more on the following points:
1. Is it true that Transitional year is very difficult (almost impossible) for FMGs to get into?
2. Do hospitals sponsor H1 visa for prelim year/ transitional year?
3. I know that it is very difficult to categorize, but what sort of credentials are required for prelim med?
4. How difficult is it to convince IM PDs about a switch from PreSurg to Categorical IM?

1. Most likely yes. Mostly they are looking into very high score IMG and recent graduates, but it's not impossible
2. Mostly don't
3. Have to look at the program one by one. It's easier to categorize than go for prelim med. It's more for advanced position
4. Only God knows :P

i would like to know the opposite, i mean how hard is to get into a categorical GS program after one year of preIM?

if u want to do categ surg - then prelim surg is easier to get into and has more weight than prelim med

and lots of prelim surg ppl apply to categ medicine and make it. u get much better calls bcoz it sounds as 1yr of usce.
