Sorry, someone from ECFMG would be best to answer this question as I have never had a resident in my program that has been on a J1 research visa. And what's an "opine"?

Hey rabbit, If you got your DS-2019, look in a box dowm left, There is the section about 212(e). See which they check for you: required 2 year or non required. Somethink else, if your position is written on DS-2019 as self-employment, you are not required to come back. Remember an easy fact, If some one is paying you and it is direcetly or indirectly from any government (US or non- US) you have to come back, otherwise, not.
