A clinical study is performed with subjects who were diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, compared with a control group of subjects who were euthryoid. The pathologic findings in the thyroid glands of these subjects are analyzed to determine the spectrum of disease processes present. Which of the following pathologic processes is most likely to be found with equal frequency in both the study and the control subjects?

A Subacute granulomatous thyroiditis

B Multinodular goiter

C Medullary carcinoma

D Hashimoto thyroiditis

E Follicular adenom

  #2

E,

  #3

E follic adenoma

  #4

C? Since it comes from C-cells its prevalence shoudn'y be influenced by the funtional status of follicular cells. What do you think? Follicular adenoma I think should be more common in the hypethyroid group...

  #5

your correct ..yessssssssss..how come i didnt even consider it ???shaking head

  #6

disapproval

  #7

A Subacute granulomatous thyroiditis << doesnt Cause Permanent Hyppthyroidism

B Multinodular goiter ??

C Medullary carcinoma <<< Least Common in Neoplasms

D Hashimoto thyroiditis << MCly pts do not have a period of trasnient Hyperthyroidism

E Follicular adenoma <<<< Very Few pts show Signs of Hyperthyroidism but Mostly r Euthyroid.

SO i will go for B just bcos i dont know abt B wink

virgola82.. is C very tricky Qs shaking head

  #9

yes the answer is C. and the explanation which is just a single line, says what virgola said...C cells do not secrete thyroid hormones...well let me try to copy, paste the explanation for all of the choices.

  #10

(A) Incorrect. There may be a period of transient hyperthyroidism in this condition.
(B) Incorrect. A small number of persons with a multinodular goiter may develop a toxic multinodular goiter with evidence for hyperthyroidism.
(C) CORRECT. Medullary carcinomas, derived from interstitial 'C' cells, do not secrete thyroid hormone and are not associated with hyperthyroidism.
(D) Incorrect. There may be transient hyperthyroidism in association with Hashimoto thyroiditis early in the course of this disease, but eventually the patient becomes hypothyroid
(E) Incorrect. A small number of follicular adenomas may be 'toxic' adenomas and secrete thyroid hormone.

Man they r trying ask which following disease will have an equal chances of occuring in the Hyperthyroid pts n euthyroid pts.

SO regardless if the pt is hyperthyroid or euthyroid he/she have equal chances of having Medullary Ca.

Damn
