In a normal person who is standing and breathing quietly ,airway resistance is lower at the apex of the lungs because
A)surfactant concentration greatest at apex
B) less turbulent flow in apex
C) transmural pr greatest at apex
D)high alveolar Pco2 at apex dilates bronchioles
E) sympathetic tone greatest at apex

I couldnot find a suitable explanation for the answer. Can someone help?

I think its C cos the person is standing and cos of gravity.

  #3

Its C...IS IT BECAUSE ..airways are wider at apex and offer less resistance

  #4

a negative IPP DILATES the airways and at the APEX there is more negaative IPP= -13 cm water. A transmural Press is the press difference btw IPP( a Force trying to pull out the aiways) and Alveolar pressure( a Force trying to compress 'em).
C is correct

yes, they are more wider at the apex than at the base because of gravity. Because of gravity the intraplueral pressure becomes more negative at the apex than at the base, as Luckyall said -13 and pulls the airways and hence less resistance.

That is right. nod
