Ya Ged3an Into sha3'leen nafsoko be7agat keteer awy, just focus, go step by step,then worry about visas, USCE, US LOR, Fellowships ,Waiver.......
From all the advices across the forums and from my friends who got high scores i should tell that the most appropriate plan is .... To Do step1 1st then apply for visa and go for CS, then Do Step2.... Use kaplan notes in all ur prep & kaplan videos , nothing else, they r too professionals.
For Step1 ...
Do Kaplan q-bank after 1st reading then Q-book, after 2nd then UW with the 3rd divide ur day and do it Random, untimed, tutor mode, take notes, then reapply for it and do it this time in random, timed mode to simulate the exam and to train urself for the time constraint, try to do NBME, a form after each reading and q source and use the assessment to plan ur next step for prep., Form 3 is the most difficult 1 so don't do it last do it after 2nd reading, form 2 is the most close to the real, do it last ..... FA some guys use it for final review but i don't like to change my source of study.... hope that helps

2003?!! What have you been doing since then? So I guess you're a graduate, how's it going with you regarding the medical career in Egypt?
I'm a 5th year student in Ain-shams. I've taken Step 1 last year on March, got 89. And I'm planning to go to the states next year for the CS exam and hopefully doing some electives, then I'll come back for the grad finals in school. And CK during el Emteyaz. Do you think this is a fair plan?
How about you? How did Step 2 go?

Faddy, make sure you cover following topics for your peds exam:
Nutritional deficiencies (especially Rickets - know everything about it)
Hemoglobinopathies (Sickle cell and Thalassemias)
Blood disorders (Anemias, leukemias and platelet abnormalities)
Chromosomal abnormalities (especially Trisomy 21)
Congentiral Heart Disease (especially VSD and Tetralogy of Fallot)
Cover these and you'll answer most of the questions during your exam, ay khedma

My experience is one of those that is gained by trial & error , as i started this a lone, didn't know anyone who is preped b4 to ask, didn't have internet access that can help like now, wasn't aware of all these forums and resources that r on the net, so what i used to do is to try everything myself.... Anyway, the story starts in 2003( hehehe like henedy august 84 fe 3ez elbard ) i was in emtiaz, prepared on & off, wasn't aware yet of what should i do exactly, and how should i prepare?? after graduation i started takleef then got Hepatitis A, bedridden for 3 months & off of study again, then finally by the end of 2004 managed to get kaplan videos 2002, and kaplan notes and thought that i got Eldeeb men dailoh ... so,started preparing this time seriously, with the thought that wow, kaplan i shoudl ace this, so i hurried up and did the exam in summer 2005 & i failed  , coz i depended only on kaplan notes & q-book and used a lot of other not exam style sources like pretest, NMS,MEPC, nothing was like the test and i got about 2 qs in each block purely from step1 and ofcourse i choosed any answer, then i started preparation again this time did UW & NBME took notes, made a study group over the net and did exam by April 2006 and this time passed, then i joined the army and just got out since last september, now am back in the game again , hoping for doing better this time to overcome all these drawbacks in my CV, or else i won't be able to get a residency.....
Regarding ur plan it is a perfect plan, doing CS early and doing electives b4 & after is a gr8 thing , having a hand on experience is a gr8 + on ur CV , and much easy to get than externships after graduation,
BUT make sure that u apply early and know their requirements to be ready to enroll as most has deadlines for application and don't accept International students easily, so if u know anyone there that can talk to them for u that would be gr8 or u can apply now and when u go there to do CS, go contact them personally
I think they require LORs from ur supervising Drs. ,Dean's Letter ,CV and they ask for Toefl, the international one with a certain score, u should do it early as it takes time about 2-3 months to schedule a date get examined and score release this is as much as i can recall but i'm not sure, better to check with Amideast, ...and the most important thing they ask for that u get a letter from ur school stating that u r a last year medical student, if u can get that during ur emtiaz u can spent all ur emtiaz there as electives which would be a gr8 thing, one in my School is doing that nowadays, but he is a son of a professor so he got this letter so easily...wish u all the best...any more inquiries, i'll be glad to help.

Well I'm sorry for all the obstacles you've faced so far, but I'm sure it will pay off and you will hopefully get what you want in the 2009 Match!
As regards externships, they are offered for students that's why I wanted to go during the final year in school, your friend in emteyaz must be doing observerships (They can't issue a letter that says you're a student during el emteyaz). The topic was heavily discussed with Mildanemia in page 4, you might want to take a look.
And I know not all hospitals require the TOEFL, some of them are just doing interviews on the phone.
So Nany, I told you fokek mel NMS
Anyway, keep up the hard work and good luck with Step 1.
