Hello! I have been a silent observer in this forum. However now I need some advice regarding planing for surgery residency in USA. I am from Sweden, 27 years old, last year medical student and graduating in January 2008. I need some advice in planing my way to residency. And I have basically come to these two alternatives and I cannot choose either of those witout help and guidance from you guys - respected members of this forum - since you guys have a lot of information ab these issues. Alternative 1. As I mentioned I will be graduating in Jan 2008, will do the USMLEs and then apply for surgery in Sept/Oct 2008. I will not have any LORs or USCE. Alternative 2. My medical school has an exchange program with medical school University of Texas at San Antonio and I can do two electives there, which will generate hopefully 2-3 LORs and 2 months USCE. The downside of this choice is that I will graduate 6 months later since I cannot apply for autumn 2007, but Spring 2008. Do you guys think it is worth it to wait 6 months? Kindly Ajmal

Alternative no. 2 sounds more appealing, but I'm not sure you could do electives without step 1. Please check the websites of those schools to see if they ask for you to have taken Step 1 before applying. Most the US schools do ask for it! Good luck!

Do the electives!!! After your board scores, USCE is the most important factor in getting interviews. Plus, after you graduate you won't be allowed to do electives; only observerships which are much more difficult to get and you only observe. You don't get to touch patients, which makes it more difficult for US doctors to write you good LOR. With the electives you get the full experience, since as a student the hospital doesn't have to bother with malpractice insurance, lincenses and more burocratic stuff pertinent only to graduated doctors. Good Luck.

Look for observerships, they are difficult to get though.
