hi,
i graduated in the year 2004 , have ecfmg certification. I participated in postmatch they said since i dont have a hands on clinical experience they cannot offer me at this time. I have been trying ang trying hard , going to hospitals and asking them if they can offer me observership or extenship. I didnt get one.I live in california . I dont think so anyone will offer me obserevships. only thing i got was volunteer in a residency hospital.
Is there any hope that working as a volunteer will help me to get contacts for observership before i apply for this match. sep 2007. or sitting at home and finishing step3 will be a good option for me.

If I were you, I would focus on S-3 and I will Try on atlantic side for obser/extership as chances are more then pacific side as volunteer in hospital is something done by retired people and no way count towards anything atleast from program /PD point of view.

Hi there!

my personal opinion-yes,you can get an observership after working as a volunteer. that's how I got my observership experience.make a good connection with a doctor, then have him right a personal letter stating that he is willing to supervise you during your observership.then present this letter to the person in charge. I did my observership at the tiny private hospital which didn't have any residency program. but-dodn't underestimate the value of an observership,it does matter-the PDs ask about it on the interview.

and who said you can't do step 3 at the same time? in fact,it's gonna be a good help and motovation for your step 3. plus, you don't have to be in the hospital 24/7-it will depend on your doctor's schedule.I did it 2-3 times a week, about 20 hours per week total.

good luck

My wife started as a volunteer and later got observership in the same hospital. Work hard. Make contacts. A hope for the best.
