Does anyone know why we treat CML with hydroxyurea and ifn-gamma? How do these work?

  #2

The mechanism of hydroxyuea is to inhibit ribonucleotide reductase. Is imaniib (gleevac) the main tx now for cml?

Treatment of CML

if patient is less than 60 yo , Do bone marrow transplantation ( only chance to cure the disease )

In patients more than 60 yo or without a donor , Interferon alfa can prolong survival and can eliminate the Philadelphia cromosome . If failed , You can use hydroxyurea which is used to reduce the number of white cells , Hydroxyurea cannot cure the disease , it 's simply cytoreductive

The most specific treatment for CML is STS571 (Gleevec ) also called IMITANIB , this one is a specific inhibitor of tyrosine kinase
