Dear All - Like many I've been a silent observer of this great forum since I started preparing for Step 1 in September '06 but I promised myself that if I got over 95, I's pass on a few tips to those just about to take the test.... 1. Resources-wise, i reckon you only need two things: First Aid and MCQs....just eat, live and breath MCQs and the exam will be A LOT easier 2. I just used Kaplan Qbank and got an average of 77% (getting high 80s, low 90s by the end. I am already a junior Dr in England so I needed about 6 months prep time for step 1. The main thing to do is go through FA and then spend 1 month (3 months is spreading one's self too thinly I think) doing Qbank as it'll allow you to become an MCQ master. The IS a knack to it and it's essential you conquer it over this month before you take the test. 3. First Aid IS all you need - I'd only use other books to clear up any conceptual problems as using one resource alone is so much better pychologically than carrying around a wearisome library 4. On the day before the exam, I thought I was losing all the info and couldn't think straight with nervousness. If this happens to you, just go out for a jog and realise that the only way you're going to get in there and beat the test is by believing in yourself. I appreciate that this sounds a little trite but it's one time when even a little carefully moulded arrogance may be an asset. Just go in, thinking "Bring it on, if you think you're hard enough!" 5. Indeed, believing in yourself id so, so important and there are times when you will feel weak within those 7 x blocks, times when you feel you've lost your drive but take breather and think of all those blood sweat and tears you put into it. I've always believed the human body has enourmous physical and mental reserve. often untapped, but very much ready if you need it. Anyway, in Summary: 3 x months (6 if you're working already), 2 x resources (FA and Qbank) and 1 x healthy attitude and self-belief. Bon chance and once you conquer Step 1, I reckon you could do just about anything!
