A 42-year-old man comes for a routine health maintenance examination. There is no family history of coronary artery disease, and he does not smoke. His weight is appropriate for his weight. BP 120/80mmHg, total cholesterol 190mg/dL, HDL 40mg/dL, triglyceride 150mg/dL. Which of the following is the most appropriate next step?
A Recommend the Step 2 National Cholesterol Education Program diet
B Measure serum LDL level now
C Measure total serum cholesterol level in 5 years
D Prescribe prophylactic aspirin
E Begin treatment w. lovastatin

The man looks nice to me... I would offer (C)

I was considering A, but I am not sure.

the guidelines say that the steps are:

1. screen with total cholesterol + HDL
2. if abnorm => get lipid profile
3. depending on LDL value prescribe diet/medication

during the test I chose B due to his borderline HDL but now that I checked the normal lipid profile it looks like he has normal total cholesterol, TG and even HDL I'd say C is the right answer
