The most common DRUG CLASS to cause priapism are antipsychotics.

The most common DRUG to cause priapism is prazosin.

Also:

In the United States, the most common cause of priapism in the adult population involves agents used to treat erectile dysfunction. The most common cause of priapism in the pediatric population is SCD.

Internationally, the most common cause is idiopathic.

They are very different drugs. Methyldopa is anti-hypertensive medication (used mostly for pregnant women in USA because of CNS side effects), dopa/carbidopa are used for Parkinson disease.

I do know what they are used for. I was just trying to understand the mechanism of their erectile SE. methyldopa is an analog of l dopa. they are related right? They do share some SE like positive coombs and postural hypotension. I know that Methyldopa is sedating while the other is stimulatory. Basically, I want to sort out how each the drugs causes either priapism or erectile dysfunction.methyldopa is an alpha2 agonist and carbidopa is dopaminergic. I want to organize this information and look at the big picture. I hope I'm not confusing you. I tend to dwell on things and since I'm just starting off my preparation , it's the worse situation to be in. Your replys are very appreciated. Thanks!

One more question. Since I have not done UW OR Qbank yet, do you think that it is a good idea to still look at the questions posted here in this forum knowing that usually they are from those Qbanks. It's just that I struggle with the fact that I might miss the interesting discussions that go on here. What is your advice? thanks in advance.

"Methyldopa acts as a false neurotransmitter, decreasing sympathetic nervous outflow and possibly diminishing libido, emission, and ejaculation." That's what I found about the drug so far, which does not help me that much, since erection is mediated by PARASYMPATHETIC autonomous system. I am sure about this particular S.E., because in Brazil we still used methyldopa a lot for HTN (it's cheap), and we saw it happen quite often. And, of course, the books state that.

Sorry I can not help you more... If I find anything, will write you.

If you are going to use the q-banks as learning tools, it's OK to read the answers here. If you want them to evaluate your knowledge, you shouldn't. I avoid NBME questions, that's how I intend to see where I stand.

Good luck!
