I believe the best time to get pregnant woould be in the beginning of the second year.

And please promise me (as a program coordinator who lived during that year we had 4 pregnancies in the intern year and survived :? ), that as soon as you know that you are pregnant to let your program director know. They need to know to change your schedule for your maternity leave, move you to less stressful rotations during the end of your pregnancy, and right after you return. A program director will have to adjust many schedules to change yours, so let them know as soon as possible, so the other residents involved will have a chance to adjust their lives.

Due to the family leave law, you can have up to three months off, but remember that you will have to make this time up to have the number of months that you need for whatever boards you will be taking following residency.

Good luck!
