I really need some help here friends. This year I applied in a hurry and because of family pressures, to not just IM but also psych, FP and peds. I had good recommendations from US physicians and probably thats why I got multiple calls 7 from IM and 6 from Psych. I ended up ranking all my IM programs before the 2 psych programs that I did decide to rank. Unfortunately, I ranked at my 8th choice. With no disrespect to the branch, I would like to say that I would want to go into a PGY2 year in IM if possible. My questions are

i.) Is it possible for a PGY1 psych resident to finish PGY1 and switch to a PGY2 in IM or FP?

ii.) How many seats are there for PGY2 in Int Medicine?

I am freaking out now. I know I should not have ranked the programs if I had no intention of joining those but what to do now. BBB or anyone who could help me?

u never know. u may like psych. consider perhaps switching to a combo program as well. also if ur stuck with psych consider c/l psychiatry. it is also called psychosomatic medicine.

Thank you SGA. I will give it a shot but I just wanted to know if it is possible at all. Is the PGY1 Psych year comparable to other intern years (since it has so much of emphasis on psych 6 months to be exact)?

1. It's going to depend on many factors if you can move to a second year spot. How many months of medicine would be one factor. Youy would need 8-10 months of medicine to be considered for a second year. Also, when are you going to interview again? Are you going to take all your vacation to use for interviews? And, how are you going to ask your Psych PD for a LOR for an internal medicine position? Good luck on that one.

2. The number of seats for PGY2 positions is going to change every year. You'll have to call programs in February to April if they have any openings.
