A publication describes a new diagnostic test for myocardial infarction. You want to know what proportion of patients with a confirmed myocardial infarction will be identified by the test.

Which one of the following measurements would indicate this?

1) Accuracy

2) Negative predictive value

3) Positive predictive value

4) Sensitivity

5) Specificity

nod its 3. positive predictive value.

its sensitivity...the questin is asking how many people who have the disease are detected by the new test.. which is sensitivity... if it asked how many people of those who tested positive with the new test are actually having mi then it would be positive predictive value...

  #5

agree , sensitivity

The specificity of a test is the probability that a test will produce a true negative result when used on an unaffected population, whereas the sensitivity of a test is the probability that it will produce a true positive result when used on an affected population (as determined by a reference or "gold standard"). The positive predictive value of a test is the probability that a person is affected when a positive test result is observed. The negative predictive value of a test is the probability that a person is not affected when a negative test result is observed. Accuracy is expressed through the above four parameters.

I will go with PPV,,, because the Q is talking about MI patients who are CONFIRMED to have the disease

  #16

As Daugherty says, PPV means "Are you sure?". That is it represents the number of positive that, in this case, actually have MI

  #17

Actually I am a little confused... It is not asking for the percentage of positives that actually have MI that is PPV... Rather, it's asking for the percentage of actual MIs (=Total Diseased = True postives + false negatives) that are positive at the test... So it should be True positives / Total diseased that is sensitivity.

So my final word is sensitivity is the answer if i correctly understood what's being asked

i go with sensitivity.
but, oh how i hate such qns...........
so, pls keep them coming, i so need to get better at them
thanks
