Retinoic acid is a neural inductor, and modulates gene expression. It is a derivative of vitamin A. Retinoic acid activates a group of transcription factors that modulate the expression of a number of target genes. Excess vitamin A can impede neural tube closure. When retinoic acid binds to the receptors the complex acts as a transcription factor to activate specific genes. These genes affect the development of the brain. Some of these target genes sonic hedgehog and Hox genes. Deficiencies and excess retinoic acid consumption during pregnancy can cause inappropriate expression of retinoic-induced gene expression
