I am a grad of 1998.I was not able to match this year but I was hopeful for next year.I am doing research for 8 month and trying to get 1-2 publications by august.also trying to get observership.Today I sent an email to one PD about observership and his reply was "I dont want to give you a complicated answer. Our program like Most of the programs prefer fresh grads and I believe you have very slim chance for 2008.I therefore cannot offer you observership at this time" I really cant believe it.Is this his honest opinion or he is just discouraging me.I am really depressed today.should I end my struggle here and go for PhD or MBA. pL advise me should I give up if the PD is true instead of waisting my time. How can I improve my chances

I graduated in 1995 and I matched this year. First try. Don't get discouraged, apply carefully, explore what programs do not have graduation cut-offs, there are plenty. And work on your interview skills. It's just his oppinion, so you won't apply to his program. That's the only information I would take from his answer.

well, it sounds very weird to mee (scarry too) that PD made a comment on your "odds" of matching for RESIDENCY with OTHER programs while you were inquiring about OBSERVERSHIP. if it were me i would probably lost my cool immediately (huge mistake, don't do it) and sent him letter saying everything i think about him, his program and anything he has to say.....i wouldn't probably, but feels good surely don't loose you hope...keep trying, but at the same time explore your opportunities, develop a back up plan, so if match will not work out you have plan B in your pocket. i am in the same situation and have the same concerns...so, for the sake of people like us - keep your chin high and follow your dream good luck

it was very inappropriate (=rude) of the PD to express his personal opinion on your 2008 Match when in fact no one but God Almighty knows what's gonna happen. all your efforts will eventually pay off. you've come this far, don't give up now!!! the only failure is when you give up!

I am an asst PD in a large community hospital...I think it doesn't matter too much. But, everyone is scoring very high these days and scores only matter so much. What I look for is...spoken english, appearance (can this person relate to americans?), hygiene (some FMG's are not...I am a FMG also so don't be offended), is the person too pushy (many people are..and I hate that), and LOR (I usually call the attending who wrote them). Don't be discouraged...work on your spoken english and obtain an "american" appearance. This is blunt, but this is what everyone says behind closed doors. KB

faisal...I do not think the PD is right in what he said in his email. I am as old a grad as you are and matched this year despite having a gap in my CV... I totally agree with Khan...I think I matched as I have very good spoken english and the persona to easily "fit in". I cannot stress enough the importance of a good LoR written by an American physician. This can put you in a different category during interviews and it worked wonders for me. There were many others who interviewed with me who were younger and had better CVs but went unmatched.. So..please, please do not get disheartened with what one person had to say about grad year and the Match. There is not much time to feel depressed... You are doing the right things..Keep going..Good luck. Top 3 to match as I saw it this year: 1)good scores 2)stellar US LoRs 3)cracking interview skills (Visa is after these as I noticed)

As a PC of over 15 years, I'll also agree with Khan. Theres a fine line between pushy and too pushy. I would rank Hook's list at 3)cracking interview skills 1)good scores 2)stellar US LoRs Good luck

Because one PD said that, it doesn't mean all programs are like that too.
