Question was what vitamin is absent in colostrom. According to this site human colostorum contains twice as much vitamin K than mature human milk http://www.health.state.mo.us/dnhs_pdfs/R_NPE_pdi...

My understanding is that newborns are deprived of vitamin K since Vit K is synthesized from the bacteria in intestines... and the newborns intestines are still sterile.

Nice fight! Can I participate, too? Okkkk, from what I have read in Dr. Goljan's High Yield Notes (he's the guy who has done some of the high yield books and used to teach for kaplan a few years back I think), he mentions that there are two vitamins that lack in breast milk: Vit D and Vit K. So both groups are right Now, Vit K is synthesized by colonic unaerobic bacteria and that's why you give newborns Vit K injections...cuz it takes up to 5 days to produce the bacteria in the gut. By the way, according to Goljan, this concept was tested in the past. A 4 day old infant was breast fed by his mother and presents with bleeding. Cause of bleeding? Lack of Vit K in milk. Must know that kid is in danger until day 5. Here's also a nice correlation with Warfarin: It inhibits epoxide reductase, the enzyme that is used in the activation of Vit K. In the next step, gamma carboxylation is supposed to happen. Peace y'all
