One approach to vaccination against tumors is to infect dendritic cells, isolated from patients, with recombinant viruses that are engineered to express large amounts of short peptides within the lumen of the endoplasmic reticulum that are retained within the endoplasmic reticulum by specific localization signals. The peptides are engineered to correspond in sequence to tumor-associated antigens. These dendritic cells are then reintroduced into the patients as a “vaccine” to induce anti-tumor immune responses.
