I have 2 very quick questions if anyone knows and is wilkling to help me.. 1) Evan if I'm an IMG can I choose to take my Step 1 in the US? Once I have chosen as test-region USA I must stick to it for Step 2 ? 2) in order to enter for the let's say the 2009 match when do I have to apply, and approximately when do I have to be done with all my exams in order to be able to apply for the ECFMG licence? Thanks a lot and I promiss to try to help with any other things I may know ! Sergio

Hi, Sergio, are you Brazilian? 1) Evan if I'm an IMG can I choose to take my Step 1 in the US? Once I have chosen as test-region USA I must stick to it for Step 2 ? You can be tested wherever you want to, do not have to stick to the same place at all. 2) in order to enter for the let's say the 2009 match when do I have to apply, and approximately when do I have to be done with all my exams in order to be able to apply for the ECFMG licence? The ideal is to have all the test results by september first/2008, so you can apply to the greatest number of programs with all the information they may ask for. Schedule step 2 CS as soon as you can, that's the most difficult to be scheduled (and easiest to pass). If you want the H1 visa, pass the step 3, too. Good luck!

H1: is the best if your intention is to live in USA afterwards. It's sponsored by the hospital, so not all hospitals offer it. If you bring your wife with you, she won't be able to work. J1: is the preferred by fellowships programs. After finishing the residency, you have to go back to your country for 2 years or get a waiver and work on an underserved area in USA, for 2 years. You don't get rid of this obligation even if you marry an american. If you bring your wife, she'll have authorization to work. It's sponsored by ECFMG. That's what I've heard, I am not an expert, OK? Good luck!

10ks again..I kinda had an idea about this stuff but I wasn't very sure..no wife yet so no problem in that area, for a long time ahead..I hope but one never knows.. I'm only now trying to figure it out very precise how all the ECFMG-USMLE thing works..I still have one more year of med school in Romania. so if I'll take Step 1 this summer and in the spring the 2nd etc etc maybe I'll have a chance, I've been to the States several times and I think the system matches the best with my aspirations..in august I will even go for a clerkship in Chicago..ok gotta go and feed the cats.. have a nice day ahead Arlete Grazzie, Sergio ..

Well... I love this country and hope I will be able to work as a doctor here. This is a blessed place for an honest, hard working person. Lots of opportunities, fair earnings (much more then fair for doctors). Good luck, hope you'll do it (and eventually find THE wife...) Ciao (or "tchau", like we say in Brazil). Arlete
