There is ABIM track of 5 years - 2 years IM + 3 fellowship but hospitals are much less likely to award it nowadays, especially after stricter controls of working hours have been implemented. Still, in most cases it is not "offered" upfront and residents are usually recruited into it during their program duration.

vrajdojc1, I thought those ABIM track were 7 years 2 years of IM+ 2years of clinical fellowship+ 3 years of research Also PhDs have better chance in it. I have one but at not cost I have enough patience to do more research, I got to feed my kid you know...

Sorry, I just wanted to edit my post. ABIM is 2 + 1-2 + 3. That is why hospitals are not willing to commit themselves to it since instead getting person to do clinical work for 6 years (res+fellowship), they get them for 3 years only. Still, the path one choses depends solely on one's preferences. I'll try to go for research track because I do want to combine both. I know it's tough, I see it every day, but it's more fun than just doing one ore another. So help me God!

I heard from someone that you can negotiate with the program if you had post-doctoral research done. I will explore that option. I really want to do Hematology/Oncology but I am just afraid that financially it will be viable. Living life on 50K pay (average) for 6 years in major metropolitan area is really tough.

That is what I'm hoping for. PhD/Postdoc/5-6 good publications and LORs from "within" the system could help. I don't mind the money, what I have as a postdoc now is more than sufficient (and it is less than PGY1 in IM would get in any of the area hospitals). Still I have to stress that I have no family to take care of (kids). Makes it easier.

I talked to few hematology/oncology fellows today and learned that there is not shortcut to these program Even with research track, you can not sit for the liscencing exam untill 7th year. Private cilnics are ripe for this speciality, if you ever wanted to be practicing independently. Pay scales are ok if you want a job. There was an article in newpaper that fellows have cilpped in one of the discussion room suggesting that there will be shortage of oncologist by 2016 (approximately 20% below requirement). The worst affected area will be sourthern and rural (no surprise there). I will try to find the link to the newspaper and put it up here. If you are aiming for it in next match it will be 2014 when we can practice as oncologist so this is very important.
