it reduses symptoms caused by variety of hormone-secreting tumors:
acromegaly, carcinoid syndrome, gastrinoma, glucagonoma, nesidioblastosis, WDHA syndrome, "diabetic diarrhea". Also for acute control of bleeding from esophageal varices.

Ondansetrone is old drug, used in USA for many years for carcinoid syn-m ( to stop vomiting, after chemotherapy).
They could be both helpfull in c.syndrome.
Probably u missed something in the Q or explanation

Ondansetron is a Centrally acting 5HT blocker its efficay in a peripheral Serotonin producing tumor has not been identified If there was choice which had said that KETANSERIN then it wud have been the answer.
Most of the Carcinoid tumors r in th eGut, Bronchial Carcinoid is not treated with drugs its rather surgically resected n medical treatment is of little value

Serotonin is not the only substance produced in the Carcinoid Tumor. Most of these tumors produce 5-hydroxytryptamine, which, in physiological conditions, is taken up and stored in the platelets while the excesses are inactivated from the liver and lung and transformed into 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA)
In order of frequency, carcinoids may occur in the appendix (35%), ileum (28%), rectum (13%), and bronchi (13%).Carcinoids do not produce the malignant carcinoid syndrome until they are no longer confined to the small bowel or mesentery, perhaps because of the liver breakdown of tumor products. After spreading to the liver, carcinoids can metastasize to the lungs, bone, skin, or almost any organ. Ovarian carcinoids may be considered exceptions. In fact, a patient with ovarian teratomas, whose secretory products enter into the systemic circulation, may present with this syndrome without liver metastasis.

ans given is octreotide.
Also diarrhea in the carcinoid syndrome is most likely caused by the hormone serotonin. Medications that block the action of serotonin such as ondansetron often alleviates the diarrhea.
also it seems that only nausea-vomiting are indications for ondasetron. (at least in Katzung)

The Same Reason I choose Octreotide was that Ondanestron is a Centrally acting drug. My reference is also Katzung

Somatostatin or its analog may prevent flushing and other endocrine manifestations. Octreotide is a synthetic somatostatin analog with high affinity for somatostatin receptors. Octreotide should be preferred to native somatostatin because of a longer half-life (average half-life of somatostatin is 2 min; that of octreotide is 2 h). So according to the reasoning they have provided is tht the Metabolite is to be observed 5HIAA and that the Carcinoids not only produce Serotonin but various other peptides n therefore Somatostatin is the only inhibitory Enzyme for all the GI peptides.

Katzung says that KETANSERIN, CYPROHEPTADINE AND PHENOXYBENZAMINE ( in combo or individually) r of value in Carcinoid Tumors as they work on 5-HT2 receptors. While Ondansetron is used primarily for Centrally acting antiemitic it works on 5-HT3 receptors
