Hi,Can anyone tell me if you can apply for a SSN without an H1 vissa..cos my visa is still in hte process of getting ready and was wondering if you can apply for one with a letter of intent from the program.

Have your checked on-line for the SSN application form? I am certain that the answer is there.

You can't... SSN first time applicants need to show in person and present the documents that allow them to work legally (passport, I-94, etc).
once you have your visa and go the the US, then you can request your SSN

I've been corrected. It's after the resident is in the county that the form is printed and taken to the SSN office for submission.

Thankyou BBB and Isther.I amalready in the US on a H4 visa.But yeah I do have to wait for the H1 to apply for SSN.

yeah prema, its not a big deal.once you get H1 papers, you can get SSN. dont have to have a stamped visa.

SSN office told me, I have to wait until july first. I got my H1 visa paper and it has been approved... Clerk said, could see my visa approval by INS on his computer screen, but I can not get a SSN until july... 
Has anybody tryed and got a SSN before july 1?
