A woman with vaginal bleeding passed some tissue when she went to the bathroom, a pathology report on tissue indicates the presence of Arias-Stella phenomenon. This finding suggests

a) either an intrauterine or ectopic pregnancy
b) endometritis secondary to intrauterine device
c) endometrial CA secondary to unopposed estrogen
d) microglandular hyperplasia of endocervix
e) Pt has been on androgen for treatment of endometriosis

endometrial hyperplasia
decidual reaction
Arias-Stella phenomenon
bilateral enlargement of ovaries : theca lutein cyst
hyperplasia of mammary lobule
metastasis
lung(50%), liver, bone, etc.

most comom cause of chorio carcinoma : hydatiform mole , previous abortion and pregnancy..

Arias-Stella's phenomenon
Also known as: Arias-Stella's effect.

Description: Highly excretive gland epithelium due to increased gonadotropin stimulation. An endometrial gland cell abnormality consisting of hyperchromatic nuclei, which may be present in normal or ectopic pregnancy. It is not a sign of endometrial adenocarcinoma, with which it was previously sometimes confused.
