hi,

i've been going thru a lot of comments that ppl have posted with regards to criteria for match...

i just wanted to post credentials of two of my close friends

case 1-graduate 2002, 75/ 81, no us lor, no observership while applying for match, no research, needs visa

10 interviews

matched at 1st choice- univ based im, j1 though, worthwhile....

case 2- graduate 2000, 79/ 84, research exp with publications, needs visa

14 interviews

matched at 3rd choice, h1 univ, one of the best programs...

all i want to say is that, scores matter a lot....but nothing is impossible...atleast after i saw these two examples, ppl with bare minimum scores making it to univ programs, i definitely think nothing in this world is impossible...

dont lose ur hopes...put in ur best efforts n trust god....things will work out sooner or later...

most importantly never give up!!!!!!!

they are ppl i know really well...so its very authentic...

i dont mean to undermine the importance of scores...but yeah!!!!!miracles do happen...

vijay,

thanks for sharing. i guess both of your friends did really well on interviews.

well, can give you another example(not me):

1998 grad, no research, no USCE, LORs from home country, step 1-83(4 attempts), step 2-81. GC holder.

had 6 interviews.

got match with her 1st choice,in univ. affil. program.

i think it's all about personality. the rest-they can teach you.

One case I know: graduated 2005, scores: step 1 98, step 2 99, 2 observerships in major american university based hospitals, needing J1, LORs from home country. He had lots of interviews, in all top programs for IM. He was not accepted by any. He is doing residency in a community based hospital, but almost gave up coming to USA, because he was counting on his high scores to be placed somewhere better. It was a huge deception.

He's a wonderful person, but very timid and does not have much English communication skills. I think that "killed" him on interviews.

So I think it's about the whole package. Nobody should take it for granted, nobody should give up before trying his best.wink

this is great that all these bright people got residencies, but....one BUT
they all had direct attachment to medicine (research at least, publications)
does anybody have a story about someone getting into residency after few years off (over 5), without research and publications?
Please? anyone?

Yes, I read a post of someone, but do not remember who. Everything is possible, so don´t loose hope.

My friend graduated in 1978 in home country(really old smiling face), did research in BWH(Harvard affiliated) when he applied residency in 1998(also old). score: step 1 76, step 2 CK 85. Green card at that time. He did very well in research but have to change carrer because of financial issues. His boss offered very high salary to ask him stay for research. But he insisted . Then the boss said if you really want to do residency, do not go to other places, stay here, i will call the PD. Then the boss talked with the PD and my friend was accepted.

Mylearning is to get any job(prefer research since it is earsier for FMG) in the hospital. Everything is easier when you are getting into the system.

yes, the person I was talking about didn't have any publications or research or anything to do in medicine for more that 6 years- and still got the residency.

so, you see- it's not impossible.
