i gave the test on 1st feb 2007
i had done kaplan+fa+hi yield series+kap q bank+appleton n lange q bank.
guess what?i failed the test.i didnt belive it at first but thatz the truth.radiology was damn tuff.also genetics...i had never seen those type of questions.
GOD knows what went wrong.they have become tougher.no doubt abt that.i hav also read many people getting same type of results theze days.

khox@ since how long you were studying for step 1?I cant belive,if anyone can fail in this exam after giving straight 12 months.i guess some thing is lacking there......you might didnt take enough time.I am nt discourging you.but i am sure in this you will nt do the same mistake as you did last time........

i took 4 months with intensive 1 month at the end.
i tried my best.i was an ok student all my undergrad days.
but i dont know what went wrong.at least i can tell u 1 thing...it isint 'sort of' easy anymore...mayb thatz y i got screwed up...i believed it wasnt 'that' tuff but i was wrong...terribly wrong...its worse than the indian pg exams.
CTs/MRIs/slides/PATHOLOGICAL SPECIMENS/hi flier genetics/GRAPH BASED Questions/2ND-3RD ORDER THINKING based Qs/length of the exam/interconnection of concepts in the same Q... n many more
well.....the last word....its tuff
it needs more practice....a lot more practice than i had ever thot...plus the exact selection of books...i felt that kaplan was (probably) not sufficient or i didnt tune in to the book properly(no regrets please... just a personal feeling)...n last but not the least...the last person to b hooked up for the tragedy?......i,me,myself...nobody else...i was the best judge for assessing whatz to b done when n how...my fault?i didnt listen to myself...believed more in others...i did what they did... studied what they told me...asked me to do what had worked for them....n see ...flatly it didnt work for me...therez a lot more that i hav learnt from this experience...
n believe me even if i dont get a residency tomorrow(im sort of mentally prepared for this) i got 1 thing to learn for sure...'man is a constant student'..the process goes on...this is life...u win some u loose some.i will put my heart n soul againfor this test...rest is in the hands of THE ALMIGHTY.

That's the spirit man!!!!! I am sure you will do great this time. I would suggest you to read all the posts from "askdoc" before starting your prep.

Despite this failure, you are positive and surely will overcome this obstacle with perseverance. After all it´s just an exam, and does not reflect everything.
How were you doing on qbanks?

now coming to the point...i havent listened to goljan lectures,but i hav started reading goljan 500 pgs+100pgs hi yield this time.also hav planned to give a reading n solve Qs from BRS PATH.
my scores in :
KAPLAN Q BANK:avg 37/50 per blok
KAPLAN Q BOOK:avg 38/50 per blok
APPLETON /LANGE:68-73% per subj.(it used to b a bit lo in anat)
now my mistakes:didnt take NBME/UW.
I WILL DO THAT THIS TIME.

I am glad that you recognize your little mistake and can be done by anyone.I am happy that you are back to your prep Do alot of questions.I guess doing alot of mcqs is a key to pass USMLE.

path:im reading goljan 100 pgs + brs path.shall i get goljan 500pgs also?

first of all ...pathology without goljan 500pg +audio is incomplete.Its very very very import to listen his lecture atleast 3 times along his notes before appearing in this exam.bro,do nt think that i m scaring you.once y read his 500pg +listen audio,2nd reading will be nt take much time...belive me....
abt bioch.........you know that y lost once.......so do nt reapt your mistake again and first go for lipincott than kaplan lec along his dvds(if y will have time)......

Can you plzz tell me : in the exam did u feel things were in Kaplan but u couldnt remember ...or couldt apply the remembered info to the Q or u never saw what they r asking ? mine is 40 days ahead and Im about to decide if I wll extend it or not ...and I was a bit scared after your post

feyza.basoglu...hi,herez my little piece of advice:
1.dont get scared.that is 1 of the things that led me down that day.i was virtually shivering with fear of the unknown.that locks ur brain when its needed the most.n thatz what u really need in the exam...an open mind with lateral thinking.so plz dont panic.
2.kaplan has good material but u haf to supplement it with audios (which i didnt).hear n add them to the margin that is given.what i did was...i read the whole text over n over but missed out the vital connecting link of the audios.
3.it will b good if u supplement ur path with brs/goljan.that will make it full proof.
4.well genetics was the one i'de say,needs real supplement...(im still hunting for a full proof bk but except hi yield series mol biology i dont hav any)
5.as far as recall is concerned (i wont lie)...i had problems...but that wud b about 3-4 Qs per block at an avg.(n thatz human i believe-still that wasent enuf to fail me but who knows?)
6.radiology needs more of an attention than v give normally.plz be honest while reading the CTs/MRIs/X RAYs.(i wasent)
7.behav (if possible)add mc fadem-hi yield behav/brs behav...thatz 'gold standard'.(my mistake? i just went thru it once.it wont take u more than 4 days to go thru that bk.its excellent.just got to go thru the tables one after the other.makes it 'real' fast). n just pray to GOD that u dont get weird doc-pt relationship case scenarios.i got some real weird ones n had no clue what the answer was.
8.no need to extend ur exam for the sake of revisions if u hav read the whole course 2-3 times for concept is not built in a month.i also had done the same thing.if u want to extend it for practising Qs then thatz where u will make the most of ur extension.
9.u can consult ur pals n see what works best for u.remember what has worked for others maynot work for u n what may work wonders for u mayb useless for others.i feel this now very strongly.n remember u r the best judge for urself.by no means i hav the courage/authority to discriminate a book that has worked wonders for others...
10.whatever i write or i wrote is pure experience that i hav gone thru when i was writing the exam/after i finished the exam.these are those points that come to ur mind instantaneously when u fail to recall/solve a question n then come back n tell ur self...'mayb i wud hav done that'
n last but not the least...GOD IS GREAT.HE NEVER LETS HIS CHILDREN DOWN.N V CAN NEVER COMREHEND WHAT HE HAS PLANNED FOR US.HAVE FAITH,B HONEST...N HE WILL BLESS US ALL.
