It is not impossible to get in without observership. It depends on the program; every programs has its own requirements.

For many years, every year , many people with no US experience get matched into many programs ..It helps tremendously but not mandatory

Due to so many above 95 scorers, programs really like people who have USA LORs. One PD told me that FMGs with no experience give us real hard time in first few months, so we are giving priority to those who have USA work experience.

IMHO observership helps very minorly to being totally none beneficial to your match, PDs wants FMGs with hand-on exp on the US soil, so pre-lim and/or away rotation is the way to go.

it is in some programs, atleast in psych. i feel an externship is like adding 2-5 points on ur usmle. if time is an issue i feel 80 with an externship is perhaps better than 82 with none. and to get those 2 extra points could take 2-3 weeks. why not do an externship instead. also there is no excuse not to find or do one except financial. contact every program and ye shall find one. go to the VAs as well. network and ask around. they r there.
