did u pass on ur first attempt? i didnt have financial problems so that was not a consideration for me. it is possible with someone with average scores to get a residency. however an externship will help u a lot. i feel an externship will be the equivalent of addint atleast 2 or more points to ur 2 digit score. plus ur interviews will go a lot better as u will have something to talk about. u can talk about ur scores at an interview. went writing to programs 95% said they had no externships. however i felt it helped me out be getting my name out. although the effort may not seem to be worth it, why not go all out. also my strategy may seem expensive. but at the least apply to a 100 psych programs. as back up u can apply to 100-200 family practice programs. at the least try and go to 15-20 interviews. they do offer loans for pre-residents.

btw i matched at my 19th choice. however i aimed high and got many interviews at impossible places (uc davis, wash u st. louis, denver, thomas jefferson, etc.) i guess about 8-10 programs on my list were very competitve. so it was a long shot at matching at those. however i played it safe and went to a lot of crappy places as well (etsu tennessee, mobile alabama, deleware psych institute, north general harlem, etc.) i ended up with a good univeristy program in a decent city. anyhow my strategy worked. if u cant afford it, then it is not necessary to apply to yale and ucla. however if in doubt apply. what i would do is take the list of programs and select which ones NOT to apply to. most people do it the other way around.
