My dilemma is that I am being offered a volunteer position at a clinical research unit but I am torn between whether to give up my time for studying or for volunteering. My question is whether I should do it to gain USCE to be ready by the time I apply for match in September 2007, but I don't have adequate time left for studying if I do it as i am appearing for cs in june and step 2ck by end of july. I have already appeared for step 1.I have currently no USCE .What is your advice?

I am no guru but wanted to give you advice anyway.
Try to negotiate to work for maybe 20 or 25 hrs a week. And study in the remaining time. Easier said than done, I know but that is the best option you have. Explain your situation to them. Hopefully they will understand.

Hi,
I was in the same situation as you. i was working as a volunteer in research , i was also doing observership and volunteer work in another hospital. I have a family to take care of. so found very stressful and i left the volunteer research. Find from then whether you will get a good lors or you have ur name in the publication. then decide to stick aorund.

score is not good. score is god. dont compro on scores as far as possible. take leave like 10 days before exam.

i think concentrate more on scores. bottom line for IMGS that is the number 1 thing.......
if u can get research then its good.

most programs with cutoff of 85 usually take residents with scores in high 90s. my two cents

Score is everything when you dont have anything ...USCE is reduced to almost nothing when you dont have scores(unless you dont have visa requirement and are not aiming high)...So score and USce will be gold or even platinum ...Score alone will be silver ...No good score and just USCE will be like raw metal ....
Bottomline -get your best score .WOrk hard and get usce as well coz thats also improtant ...and once you are done with your step in juoly you can eat drink sleep and perpetrate everything else at the place where you are going to gather your usce..Dont loose the opportunity of getting USCE ..hang in there part time untill your exams ..You do your exams well and hit USCe hard in July and AUgust ..Seems like best way to go .
