I am not sure, if any or some or most of you have reached the satge of searching for accomodation. I am searching in Philly and it is damn expensive for a new person like me who does not have a car or any family support in US. If anyone has idea, not a random guess, can you please tell me how much should a reasonable size one bedroom apartment with washer/dryer in unit will cost in Philly downtown area. My search is giving me too expensive options (1400$/ month). Please note, I am looking for a safe apartment within walking distance of Penn Hospital. I am thinking of a short term lease (6 months) so that I can later move to a distant place once I have a license and a car. Any suggestions or ideas please.

Downtown everywhere is almost always expensive. Probably you can find an area not too far from hospital, but reachable by one bus ride. Good luck Moozy!

Moozy, Check out this: http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/apa/ Craiglist is how many people lately find an apartment in large urban areas. You can also narrow down your search to a certain area or certai price range you're willing to pay. But, before you do your search, find out what neighborhoods in Philly are safe and affordable (downtown not being an option since, as you said, you wouldn't afford it). Once you find out what neighborhoods are OK, do your Craigslist search and, once you see something that looks like a good deal, call ASAP. Don't waste your time email-ing them because most people would not even check their email for this. Usually good deals go away in less than 1/2 hour! So you need to act fast! Good luck!
