The resting membrane potenital for an isolated muscle cell is - 70 mV. Equilibrium potential for important ions are: - ENa=+ 60 mV
- EK=- 80 mV
- ECl= - 70 mV
- ECa=+ 125 mV
Which of the following most likely forms the resting membrane potential of the cell? - High K Conductance and some Na Conductance
- High Cl Conductance and some Na Conductance
- High Ca Conductance and some Cl Conductance
- High K Conductance and some Cl Conductance
- High K Conducatance only

1. high K only will be -80, add some Na to get -70. other are not counted for Cl and Ca membrane is not highly permeable.

Correct 1. Source UW. The resting membrane potential is the difference in electrical charges across the cell membrane under steady state. The ions which are most permeable to cell membrane are make the largest contribution to the resting membrane potential. In general high K efflux and some Na influx are responsible for the resting membrane potential which is typically -70mV.
