Worse? Low pass. You can take the test again and get a 90 if you don't pass. If you pass with a 75, you have a 75. Just be prepared to explain a low score during an interview. Good luck

Yes that is true UMASS....but, you can explain. There are a number of reasons that you can fail the exam...for example, just did not prep well. They understand this and will not make a really big deal about it if you have a good reason. At least with a second score of 90+ you will get the interview, and the chance to explain. If you just pass the exam...75 you can forget getting that interview. You will not even get the chance to explain.

I think that if you don't pass is worse. There are many programs that don't accept applications of those who have failed in either step. There are some others that don't accept more than 3 failures. There are some that ask you for more than 90 and few other that don't ask you anything at all. The key point is to be sure when you are ready to pass. On the other hand there are some statistics in FA where it says something about the possibilities you have to pass the test after you failed. In fact it says that if you scored 160 your chances are more to fail again rather than not and if you get 150 you have 0%chances to pass the test. Anyway they are just statistics. Take the test only when you are ready.

You know guy, I never think about that, I was just thinking, I would like to pass the test, but now that you all are saying that ,make me think on reschedule my test. So what you all mean is once you get 75 %, you will no have a chace to retake the test ? If is that way I would like to get a gook grade above 80 % or is better fail.

If you pass with a low score you have to wait 7 years to improve your score as long as you didn't finish your credential process.

Thanx guys .... really confusing .....but i believe it would be better to pass by the first time .... by the way what is 3 digits scores? i know that the scores are usually 75-80-90-99.......etc . but i read in this forum about numbers like 260, 180 ....what are they ? and how they count our scores?

by the way what is 3 digits scores? Scores - there are two scores, a two digit and a three digit. For many years, it was the two digit score that was used. In recent years, the three digit has become more popular.
If you pass with a low score you have to wait 7 years to improve your score as long as you didn't finish your credential process. Then the problem becomes that you have been out of medical school too long to join most residencies.
So what you all mean is once you get 75 %, you will no have a chace to retake the test ? That's correct.
Take the test only when you are ready. Absolutely flipping correct! :!:

"If you just pass the exam...75 you can forget getting that interview. You will not even get the chance to explain." I think we should not try to discourage our fellow exam takers. Yes, it is true that we are free to express our opinions, but there is a fine line between just expressing an opinion and for example some instances giving a verdict. UMASS, I think you should take all the opinions into consideration, then decide for yourself, study hard and believe in yourself, have faith, think positively and you'll get there. Best of luck to you!

I just thought that if anyone had to retake the exam....to see the positive side of things. This is your second chance to do well on the exam. In the end....the most important thing is to pass the exam....without which we can not get the license or residency. For thoses of us who have to retake the exam....we should not be so down on ourselves...just study hard for the good marks. The God will deliver you to your destination. For those of us who have passed regardless of the score...take comfort in that you have passed a big obstacle which stops many. The step 1 is not the whole world....just seems that way.

Hi. I WORK IN A HOSPITAL AND i MET LOTS OF PEOPLE WHO ARE DOING RESIDENCY STAT!!!! THEY ALL HAVE GONE THROUGH HELL, BUT THEY MADE IT, LOW SCORES, GOOD SCORES, IT TAKES TIME "CERTAINLY",BUT ONCE YOU MADE THE DECISION TO COME HERE JUST DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO. THE GROUP WHO MATCHED THIS YEAR TOLD ME THAT SOME OF THEM DID NOT HAVE GRAET SCORES, THERE WERE TWO GUYS THAT SAID THAT THEY BEARLY PASSED, AND GUESS WHAT? THEY MATCHED, IN HELL BUT THEY DID. IF YOU GET A BAD SCORE, YOU STILL HAVE ANOTHER TEST TO MAKE IT BETTER...AND REMEMBER YOUR LETTER OF RECOMENDATIONS, PLUS ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE DOING NOW, RESEARCH, WORK IN THE FIELD ETC. ONE RESIDENT TOLD ME ONCE "IT IS BETTER TO PASS THE FIRST TIME WITH WHATEVER, INSTEAD OF PASSING THE THIRD TRY WITH 99". MAKE YOUR OWN CONCLUSSIONS. TRY, TRY, AND TRY. THERE IS NO OTHER WAY, EXPERIENCE IT FOR YOUR SELF AND TELL US ABOUT IT LATER. PERSONALLY I HAD A BAD SCORE FIRST TRY, BUT I WOULD DO THE IMPOSSIBLE AND POSSIBLE TO GET INTO RESIDENCY.

i belive this is very wrong to talk about which one's better. firstly, why even think what's better, it's not something you have control over. it is not like you're sitting on the exam thinking that you might be "low-passing" and suddenly decide to fail because "it's better" secondly, if you're yet to take the exam you should really want to ace it, not just barely pass. try and do your very best till the last question. you can't know everything and you don't know which ones don't count. and if you passed it, there's no much one can do, move on, get better prepared for the next one. lots of people with not so high scores get residency positions, score is just one of the criteria, though important one. it all depends on lots of things, including lors, experience, chosen speciality, location, etc. so, as our colleague said, have faith and think positively. couldn't agree more on that one! the best of luck to all!

I have a friend, that at this moment he is working in not a very good job, he is specialist in his country, he can not take the test at this moment not even enroll in the test because of his economical position , I asked him which is better fail or pass with 75%, he said IF I GET 75 % I WILL BE CELEBRATING, this is a hard test, if you pass, you can get, well any speciality that you want, except Surgery, Neuro, Cardio, Pneumo, but you atill have other once very good too, As my wife said , don't worry for that, just PAS THE TEST man. wish thwe best for every one.

Hi. Listen, I resident who is finishing his surgery Residency on June from the Philipines told me that on your RESUME everything counts for the interview, what ever you did in your Medical career it is very important. Personally, after I finished my Medical school, I worked like a House Officer in a Hospital in my country for 10 months, people who had reviwed my resume said that is fine. Try to work on the field as a Medical Assistant, phebotomist, or do research, work as volunteer for few hours in a hospital so you can get to know people and know how things move around medicine in this country. Good luck!
