how does one track ones visa application

I woukd be interested to find this out too.. since my application is apparently in process... atleast my lawyer said so,.... but I dont want to be a pain in their a_ _ by asking about it again and again.

guys ,when we do intial visa processing ,they give it for 1yr or 3yr??
as i see contract is for 1yr
any inputs please
